  • Half of Buick Dealers Take Buyouts to Avoid Having to Sell GM’s Electric Cars

    12/20/2023 9:07:57 PM PST · by Ronaldus Magnus III · 53 replies
Almost half of Buick dealers across the United States have opted to take buyouts from General Motors (GM) to avoid having to sell Electric Vehicles (EVs) at a time when consumer reports show Americans are increasingly turned off by the cars. According to GM, almost 1,000 of its nearly 2,000 Buick dealerships across the U.S. chose to take buyouts from the parent company rather than investing potentially millions into retooling and prepping dealers to service and sell EVs.

The latest offering from Buick is the 2024 Envista, a stylish and roomy alternative to traditional boxy SUVs that offers a swoopier roofline much like more expensive alternatives from upscale German brands. With its sleek profile, seating for five and the practicality of a hatchback design, the subcompact Envista also happens to be Buick’s cheapest model for the 2024 model year — even though it’s about a foot longer than Buick’s other subcompact SUV, the boxier Encore GX. What you don’t get, however, are the availability of all-wheel drive or any powertrain options other than the standard turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder...

Sept 2 (Reuters) - General Motors Co said Friday it will offer all of its estimated 2,000 U.S. Buick franchise dealers buyouts as it moves to make the brand all-electric by 2030 in the United States. The Wall Street Journal reported the news earlier, quoting Global Buick chief Duncan Aldred who is set to discuss the plans with dealers Friday in a virtual meeting. He noted shifting to EVs will require significant investments by Buick dealers. "So if they want to exit the Buick franchise, then we will give them monetary assistance to do so," Aldred told the newspaper.

General Motors has put six of its cars under review, including its once breakthrough Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid, and is evaluating whether to cancel them in the coming years, according to a report from Reuters. The news comes as sales of cars continue to plummet in the U.S. and as consumers increasingly turn to SUVs and pickups. Besides the Chevrolet Volt hybrid, other vehicles believed to be under consideration for elimination iinclude the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Impala and Chevrolet Sonic, according to Reuters. GM spokesman Jim Cain declined to comment on the report. UAW President Dennis...

Built in China, sold in the U.S.: It's a first for GM and any U.S. automaker. GM said it will sell the Chinese-built Buick Envision, a crossover SUV, in the U.S. market starting next year. The UAW attacked the plan, saying it was "a slap in the face." It said GM should reconsider its plans and instead build a version for the U.S. market at a U.S. plant. "The men and women of GM and the American taxpayers who invested so much in GM's future deserve better," said the union. GM agreed in its latest labor deal to invest $8.3...

General Motors will end production of six sedans by the end of 2019. North American customers want SUVs, crossovers, hatchbacks and trucks. Sedans have fallen out of favor. As GM (GM) adjusts to changing customer behavior it is also planning ahead for the future. The company announced massive layoffs and is closing five North American facilities as it transitions to self-driving, electric cars of the future. The soon-to-be closed plants mean GM will no longer make these cars: Buick LaCrosse January - September sales: 13,409, down 14.2% The LaCrosse is a large car built by a brand that was a...

The discovery of a pair of identical, barely driven 1987 Buick Grand Nationals has car enthusiasts scratching their heads at how they ended up parked in a dirty garage. The two identical classic muscle cars were recently purchased in a small town in western Oklahoma by a pair of friends who say they'll be kept together for all time. The twin Grand Nationals have identical options and consecutive vehicle identification numbers, meaning they have been together since they rolled off the factory line, one after the other.

Most Buick vehicles sold in the United States after 2016 could be imported from China and Europe, according to two sources familiar with parent General Motors Co's plans. Only two of Buick's future U.S. models, replacements for the mid-size LaCrosse sedan and the large Enclave crossover, are expected to be built in North America, according to the sources, who did not want to be identified because their companies work with GM.... In Detroit, Cindy Estrada, head of the UAW's GM department, said the automaker would be "tone deaf" to import vehicles from overseas "after the sacrifices by U.S. taxpayers," as...

For the second time in its 110-year history, Buick has topped one million sales in a year--and set a new overall record in the process. Last year saw the marque shift 1,032,056 vehicles, beating the company's last million-sale year in 1984, when it sold 1,003,345 cars. Whereas that 1984 volume was largely down to North America, Buick's current prosperity is largely influenced by a different country: China. Of those million-plus sales, a full 809,918 cars were sold in the Chinese market, nearly four times as many cars as the 205,509 units sold in the U.S. market. Buick is just one...

It features in one of the most famous movie scenes of all time - and now it could be yours. The car in which Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman's characters travelled in to the airport for Casablanca's immortal finale is going under the hammer next month. The 1940 Buick Phaeton - which belonged to Bogart's character Rick Blaine in the 1942 film - is expected to fetch $500,000 (£312,000) at auction in New York on November 25. It is among a number of iconic movie props and costumes being sold off as part of the Dreams Are Made of This...

Federal bailout funding may have prevented General Motors from going through a normal bankruptcy process, but it has come at a significant price in terms of reputation and potential buyers. Fifty percent (50%) of American adults are less likely to buy a GM car because of the bailout. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds just four percent (4%) are more likely to buy from the company that critics refer to as Government Motors. Forty-two percent (42%) say the bailout has had no impact on their buying plans one way or the other. The flip side of the data...

While Butler University's long-shot bid collapsed Monday night against the University of Connecticut in the NCAA title game, basketball fans got a glimpse of another Cinderella story that may have a better chance of success. Buick, the long-struggling General Motors brand, recently signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the NCAA, highlighted by the debut of a new “anthem” commercial during the final days of March Madness. “Our intention is to plant the flag and inspire a reappraisal of Buick,” said Craig Bierley, the brand’s marketing chief. Not many Americans are aware that Buick is still around, Bierley concedes. Indeed, many...

A pristine Buick that's sat in the showroom of a Signal Hill dealer for 23 years is the stuff of turbocharged automotive legend. The sinister-looking black coupe sits in a corner of the showroom floor, oozing macho and muscle. Square headlights. Evil sneer for a grille. Six cylinders of turbocharged fury. If Darth Vader drove a car, this is what you might find in his garage. This new car is 23 years old. It's a Buick Regal GNX, and in 1987 car enthusiasts including celebrity collectors Reggie Jackson, Burt Reynolds and Sylvester Stallone snapped them up. This menacing Buick —...

KANKAKEE, Ill.- A 1958 Buick has been unearthed almost 40 years after three young men walled it up under an Illinois house as a practical joke , observers said. The Buick Special was abandoned in Kankakee, Ill., in 1971 when it broke down and its owner couldn't afford the repair costs, The Chicago Tribune reported Sunday. A local dealer had no use for it and gave it to the three jokesters, who bricked it behind a wall in the basement of a house one of them owned, the newspaper said. Daniel Newman, 65, one of the perpetrators of the gag,...

Can't post an excerpt due to copyright restrictions from Bloomberg, but the gist of the story is that Government Motors announced a new Buick SUV and then pulled it off the market within the week because, to quote a similar article from AP: "The Buick crossover we showed received consistent feedback from large parts of all the audiences that it didn't fit the premium characteristics that customers have come to expect from Buick," Stephens wrote. "We were all struck by the consistency of the criticism of the compact crossover." In other words, it was a dog. You can read...

A 51-year tradition may be coming to an end as General Motors has reportedly pulled its sponsorship from the Buick Open. The Buick Open is one of the oldest events on the PGA Tour, but Golfweek reported this weekend that the event will disappear from the PGA Tour after this year's tournament. A new sponsor and location could be announced as soon as the July 30-Aug. 2 tournament in Grand Blanc is finished. Former Buick Open winner, Tom Pernice Jr, a member of the Tour's Player Advisory Council, confirmed the report but would not identify the new sponsor. "Buick doesn't...

In its filing in the Federal Bankruptcy Court for the Second District of New York, GM claimed assets of about 83 billion dollars, which is quite impressive. Impressive, that is, until one looks at its debts, which currently total nearly 173 billion dollars. It is drowning, quite frankly, in a sea of bad debt, bad management decisions, and sweetheart labor contracts given to a union (the UAW) that long ago lost its way, and which has proved famously bullheaded in recent years, conducting a strike against General Motors on a company-wide basis as recently as 2007. Looking back now, we...

SHANGHAI, China — As General Motors sales continue to tank in the United States, the automaker is racking up impressive gains in China, where sales shattered another record in April. GM sales in China jumped 50 percent in April, to 151,084. In comparison, GM's U.S. sales last month plunged 33 percent to 172,150. The Buick brand in particular is on a tear in China. Where Buick dealers in the U.S. sold only 8,928 vehicles in April, in China they delivered 38,071 — a 64 percent increase over the previous year. GM, however, is seeing the greatest growth spurt in minivehicles,...

BEIJING, April 19 /CNW/ -- The sleek Buick Invicta show car revealed here in conjunction with Auto China 2008 is Buick's strongest statement yet of its deliberately international plans. The four-door midsize sedan with a coupe-like roofline presents bold direction for Buick's new generation of vehicles in the world's two biggest automotive markets -- the United States and China.
