In an act of nature that defied the laws of probability, a squirrel seriously injured a bicyclist at the Levi’s GranFondo charity ride in Sonoma County over the weekend when it ran onto the course and got caught in the spokes of the man’s bike, authorities said.

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a bill allowing local governments to impose a vehicle registration surcharge to pay for bike lanes and trails. The governor's office said in a statement that Brown signed the bill in Sacramento on Saturday. It lets cities, counties or regional park districts to impose an annual vehicle registration surcharge of up to $5 to pay for local bike lanes and trails. California prosecutors have declined to file charges against a sheriff's deputy who struck and killed a prominent entertainment attorney and former Napster executive with his patrol car last year. Deputy Andrew Wood was apparently distracted by his mobile digital computer when his patrol car drifted into the bike lane, running over cyclist Milton Olin Jr. [snip] Prosecutors said in a letter released Wednesday and cited by Los Angeles Daily News that because Wood was acting within the course of his duties when typing into his computer, criminal charges are not warranted.

A man who loved his bike a lot, took it with him when he died. Bill Standley, 87, of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, spent many years traveling across the United States, on his 1967 Electra Glide. Standley left behind three children, two sons and daughters. A group of men in Brooklyn apparently decided the fastest way to steal a bike chained to a tree was to cut down the tree. Leopard-Trek's Wouter Weylandt was fatally injured today in a crash on the third stage of the Giro d'Italia. The 26-year-old went down on the Passo del Bocco and was unconscious at the scene.
