Bay Bridge bike path in works [western span, $500 million for path]
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | September 4, 2013 | Phillip Matier And Andrew Ross

With the east span finally open, planners are already at work on the next mega-Bay Bridge project - a $1 billion-plus makeover of the western span that would include a $500 million hanging bike path.

"I'm sure the bike advocates are going to start agitating for that" soon, Metropolitan Transportation Commission Executive Director Steve Heminger said from the stage at Monday's bridge re-opening ceremony.

They already are.

But the biggest challenge of all could be selling toll-paying commuters on the idea.

Drivers are already paying up to $6 at peak hours to cross the Bay Bridge. Redoing the western side to include the bike path would probably mean "putting something in front of the voters," - like a "temporary" $1 hike in bridge tolls, said MTC spokesman Randy Rentschler.

There’s going to be a bike path on the new Detroit river bridge too. Fortunately Canada is picking up that tab.

Half a billion dollars for a bike path on a single bridge, while voting for totalitarianism and the destruction of Constitutional freedoms to enforce the gunpoint tax collection to fund it.

In the future, when liberals are studied in history classes, the students will sit dumbfounded, tears of shame pouring down their faces, when they see to what what utter depths of hypocrisy and depravity the human race had decended in the past.

Put in the bike lane and charge cyclists a $275,000 toll. Each way.

Personally, I am fed up with cyclists claiming rights to the road but not following the laws. They should absolutely pay a toll.

Why is a bike path going to cost half a billion dollars? That’s absurd. I enjoy cycling, but I don’t expect others to fork out that kind of $$ so I can feel good about myself. If that’s what I need I can just go buy a Prius.

They could easily make a bike lane on the existing span for a whole lot less money, and charge tolls to boot. If cars pay $5 a pop, make the bikes pay $1.

A BILLION dollars to upgrade a bridge that already exists? In a state going through the couch cushions for loose change? Bullshorts.

Where is all of this money coming from? This is just one bridge in the state.

The just finished spending a fortune on repairing the east span of this bridge that was damaged in a major earthquake out there in 1989.

That is not all folks. Just an hour ago, I saw on my local news here in the East Bay that the CHP will be monitoring bicyclist who are speeding. Speeders will too get ticketed...finally. Good for cars good enough for speedy cyclist who think they are in a race.

I’ll contribute to the bike bridge as long as there’s a 10 foot gap right in the middle of it.

Ever wonder why the bay bridge tolls are so high? Money from that bridge went to build other bridges in California, including the upgraded San Mateo and Dumbarton bridges. I don't like it one bit that they want to build a bike path, a huge waste of money that serves no purpose for commerce. Tolls that were low and promised to be temporary, got larger and permanent as the funds were diverted. Same is true of all bridge tolls, largely diverted for other uses than for the costs of the bridge. Damn politicians.
