PITTSBURGH - Police were searching Friday morning for a burglar who broke into a Carrick bar. Channel 11’s Steven Fisher reported that police and the owner were called to the Double Door Bar at 4 a.m. when a security alarm went off. Officers found the cash register on the ground, but no money was missing. The burglar took two six-packs of Coors Light beer. The owner told Channel 11 News that the surveillance cameras at the bar were not working.

A crew of five astronomers from Belgium have discovered an exceptional planetary system and surprisingly it has got the name of their favorite beer. The planetary system has been christened TRAPPIST-1 by the astronomers after The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope or TRAPPIST. It is an arrangement of seven planets just 40 light-years away, surrounding a dwarf star. The sizes of the planets are almost similar to that of the Earth. Multinational beer and spirits company Diageo, which owns Guinness and Harp, among many other famous brands, is planning on opening a brand new Guinness brewery in Baltimore County, Maryland in the fall. It will be the first Guinness brewery in the US in 60 years. Diageo is planning on investing $50 million (€46 million) in this project and will begin construction this spring at a former bottling plant in Relay, MD, which closed in 2015. The project is expected to create 70 new jobs in brewing, warehousing and packaging, as well as in the visitor experience side of the operation.

POTTSVILLE, Pa. - America's oldest brewery has announced that it is expanding its distribution. Pottsville-based D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., will soon be delivering its brands to Indiana. Yuengling said three wholesalers have been assigned to distribute the beer. They are Monarch Beverage, Five Star Distributing, and Indiana Beverage. "Our family has been in business in Indiana for five generations and to be able to partner with the America’s Oldest Brewery is both humbling and powerful," said Bruce Leetz, owner of Indiana Beverage.

A former ombudsman at one of Canada’s big banks has been tapped to investigate complaints of a far more frothy nature: beer. The Beer Store has appointed Charles Dougall as Ontario’s first beer ombudsman. The foreign-owned consortium, which operates more than 470 retail outlets throughout the province, says Dougall will be responsible for mediating operational disputes between the Beer Store, its customers and brewers. He has been appointed to a three-year term, beginning Jan. 2, and will report annually to the Beer Store’s independent directors.
