The Committee on Liberatory Information Technology has announced a long-standing Chromebook bug that could reveal user location history. Evidently already on the radar of Google, the platform has a feature allowing anyone with physical access to your device to connect as a guest and view your Wi-Fi logs. Of course, once said intruder has accessed these logs, they would then need the technical knowhow to make sense of them. However, if they are skilled enough, they may be able to track your place history by viewing your Wi-Fi network access over the past seven days. It turns out the bug...

Got an ASUS motherboard? Are you having problems booting sometimes? Do messages regarding ‘chassis intrusion’ get displayed on your screen, and stop the boot process, even though no-one has opened the case? There might be a simple solution. Chassis Intruded! Fatal Error... System Halted. The first time I got the above message I was a bit surprised. I’m the only one that uses my computer, there are no kids in the house, and the case hadn’t been opened for months. Pressing the Reset button resulted in a clean boot, so I wasn’t worried. Computers do strange things sometimes and reboots...

A few months back, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a complaint against Taiwan-based hardware maker Asus accusing it of misrepresenting its products' security features and failure to address security vulnerabilities. The two parties have agreed to a settlement, one that forces Asus to subject its procedures and products to independent security audits for the next 20 years. According to the FTC's complaint, Asus has failed numerous times in addressing severe security issues and has made false claims about its products to its customers. Asus had flaws in its AiDisk and AiCloud router features The FTC pointed to numerous...

Ad blocking is something of a contentious issue, but it's one that has been brought to prominence in 2015. The adblockalypse arrived this year as the debate about whether disabling ad blockers was preferable to paying for content. Adblock Plus -- one of the best known ad blockers out there -- recently updated its acceptable ads policy which gives people the option of permitting certain ads to appear in their browser. But a new deal struck with ASUS means that anyone buying a phone or tablet from the Taiwanese company in 2016 will find that ad blocking is baked in...

Asking for opinions on the best budget tablet. Something big enough for me to work on -- i.e., be able to type easily and see the display without holding it six inches from my face. Not worried about communications -- as long as it's got WiFi built in (which I'm sure they all do), I can use my cellphone as a mobile hotspot to transfer/send files. This is intended to be a replacement for a working laptop/notebook. And again -- "budget" is the keyword. Thanks all!.

TAIPEI—Asustek Computer Inc., the Taiwan company that pioneered the netbook, joined the battle to take on Apple Inc.'s iPad, unveiling a tablet computer that will run on Microsoft Corp. software. Speaking ahead of Tuesday's official start of the Computex trade show here, Asustek executives said their new device, called the Eee Pad, will start selling in the first quarter of next year. The touch-screen tablet personal computer will use Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system and Intel Corp.'s Core processor. In a potentially risky move that underscores the importance of software in the burgeoning tablet market, Asustek will also launch an...

A few years ago rivals mocked Jonney Shih, chairman of Asustek, and his purse-size laptop computers. Millions of netbooks later, Shih is having the last laugh. On a hillside above the Hsing Tian Kong temple in the northern reaches of Taipei, Jonney Shih sits on a wobbly stool next to an ornate low wooden table. Dressed in a taupe suit, white shirt, and silver tie emblazoned with jaguars, Shih, 57, cheerfully waves off three umbrella-wielding employees who try in vain to shield their boss from the hot sun and a swirl of menacing bees. But Shih, who is waiting to...

Who in the hell is Asustek, and why does Microsoft hate them more than any other company in the industry? Why does Apple, Dell and Palm Computing hate them? And why does Intel love them? Taiwan's Asustek -- better known as ASUS -- is one of the most interesting, innovative and fastest-growing companies in technology. At its core, Asustek makes motherboards -- more than any other company. Asustek motherboards are the heart of Sony's PlayStation 2 consoles, Apple MacBooks, Alienware PCs, and some HP computers. But that's not why they're hated. The source of ire is a tiny laptop...

A couple of weeks ago, we featured the Sony Vaio TZ21 range of ultra-portable notebooks. Little bigger than a sheet of A4 paper, the TZ21 series is perfect for mobile workers and "hot-deskers", because it's packed full of applications, and fits easily inside a briefcase or a handbag. The only downside is price: at almost £1,500, there's a premium for its tiny proportions. The Eee PC Small but perfectly formed: Asus's Eee PC But what about those people who already have a desktop computer, or perhaps a chunky but reliable laptop that works perfectly well at home but causes hernias...

A little over a week ago, reviews of Asus's Eee PC 701 started to trickle out onto the Internet. Some of the larger publications, like CNet and LAPTOP Magazine got their hands on the unit first, but as it has become more widely available sites like HotHardware and PC Perspective have now put out their own reviews of the Eee PC. The overall verdict is fairly unanimous: the device's keyboard is a bit cramped, but in terms of price, performance, and features the Eee PC hits the trifecta. Indeed, Asus appears to have gotten so many things right with the...
