A story by CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski and Nathan McDermott published on Thursday features a video showing former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore suggesting the September 11, 2001 terror attacks may have taken place because the country had distanced itself from God. Moore, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, made the remarks at the Open Door Baptist Church in Enterprise, AL in February. He read from Isaiah 30:12-13 and made the connection.

Update 7:38p.m.: Now the Moore campaign is walking back its previous statement. They have agreed to a debate with Strange sans moderator. "We are glad Luther Strange has agreed to our challenge of an honest and open debate, with no conditions," the Moore campaign said. A Moore campaign spokeswoman said the details haven't been worked out yet......... This is a typical “Tea Party” story you might have heard from 2010, and indicative of the GOP’s failed attempts to kill the Trump movement. Roy Moore appears set to steamroll Mitch McConnell-backed Luther Strange. The GOP has been pouring money into Alabama to try to defeat Moore, but it looks like a huge waste of cash:

The special Alabama Senate primary is at once the most exciting and the most boring spectacle in politics. Depending on who's keeping score, the contest between Judge Roy Moore and incumbent Sen. Judge Roy Moore is the clear conservative frontrunner for the U.S. Senate GOP primary runoff on September 26, dwarfing the GOP establishment-backed Sen. Luther Strange by more than double digits in a new poll. Moore towers over Strange with a solid majority of the electorate and a 16-point lead. Moore’s 52 percent, per the new poll, dwarfs Strange’s 36 percent in the poll conducted by firm Southeast Research from August 29 to August 31 in Alabama. The son of Alabama co-offensive coordinator Mike Locksley was killed Sunday in Maryland. Howard County Police said Meiko Locksley, 25, was found outside his Columbia, Md., home around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. He was transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma, where he died overnight, Baltimore TV station WMAR reported. Outsider Roy Moore, who is favored to knock off Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) in this month's Republican primary runoff, suggested Friday that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should be replaced as majority leader. In an interview with LifeZette, Moore objected both to McConnell's lack of results in passing President Donald Trump's agenda and his attempts to prop up Strange.
