Another cold/snow blast for the east, rain for the west, plus a look at the coming El Niño. As Joe mentioned last week, this is an atmosphere-driven El Niño, not water-driven, and therefore short-term. There will be a lot of screaming about global warming in July, then silence as it dissipates into another brutal winter.

The White House will launch a new online initiative on Wednesday that will provide users access to climate data to spread awareness about the effects of global warming in an effort to improve climate-change preparedness across the country. As part of the initiative, the Obama administration will make federal data on climate change accessible to citizens, businesses and local governments in a new section within the data.gov website -- called climate.data.gov -- that will be jointly run by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, and NASA.

The White House is launching an initiative Wednesday that aims to expand the use of climate data nationwide, to help communities cope with the impacts of global warming. The effort includes making federal data more accessible through climate.data.gov; launching a design competition to demonstrate the extent to which Americans are vulnerable to coastal flooding; releasing new federal map data to depict which aspects of the nation's infrastructure are vulnerable to climate change; and enlisting private firms such as Google and the software company Esri to disseminate and store data. In a joint blog post, White House counselor John D. Podesta...

PHILADELPHIA — It’s St. Patrick’s Day and three days away from spring, but after enjoying mild and pleasant weekend weather, winter reminded us of its wrath this morning with yet another “upside-down” storm that delivered heavy snow, especially to the shore points and portions of Delaware. 4.5″ of snow fell today at the airport, making it the snowiest St. Patrick’s Day ever. The previous snowiest St. Pat’s was all the way back in 1892 when 3.5″ of snow fell. In addition to that, we have now achieved another dubious milestone this winter. With 67.4″ of snow this season, it’s now...

A nice conversation about how the coming atmospheric-driven El Niño will affect the winter 2014-2015. Also hurricane forecast for the coming season. It looks like another bad winter for the Midwest/Central Plains/Eastern Seaboard coming 2014-2015.

The planet is not in danger of catastrophic man made global warming. Even if we burn all the world's recoverable fossil fuels it will still only result in a temperature rise of less than 1.2 degrees C. So say The Right Climate Stuff Research Team, a group of retired NASA Apollo scientists and engineers - the men who put Neil Armstrong on the moon - in a new report. "It's an embarrassment to those of us who put NASA's name on the map to have people like James Hansen popping off about global warming," says the project's leader Hal Doiron....

I receive many e-mails, and a recurring complaint is that many of my posts are too technical to understand. This morning’s installment arrived with the subject line, “Please Talk to Us”, and suggested I provide short, concise, easily understood summaries and explanations “for dummies”. So, here’s a list of basic climate change questions, and brief answers based upon what I know today. I might update them as I receive suggestions and comments. I will also be adding links to other sources, and some visual aids, as appropriate.

Like a simple parlor trick, the networks are able to make skeptical scientists vanish, at least from the eyes of their viewers. In some cases, the broadcast networks have failed to include such scientists for years, while including alarmist scientists within the past six months. ABC, CBS and NBC's lengthy omission of scientists critical of global warming alarmism propped up the myth of a scientific consensus, despite the fact that many scientists and thousands of peer-reviewed studies disagree. Neither CBS nor ABC have included a skeptical scientists in their news shows within the past 1,300 days, but both networks included...

Causes and Implications of the Growing Divergence between climate model simulations and observations For the past 15+ years, there has been no increase in global average surface temperature, which has been referred to as a ‘hiatus’ in global warming. By contrast, estimates of expected warming in the first several decades of 21st century made by the IPCC AR4 were 0.2C/decade. This talk summarizes the recent CMIP5 climate model simulation results and comparisons with observational data. The most recent climate model simulations used in the AR5 indicate that the warming stagnation since 1998 is no longer consistent with model projections even...

Washington, D.C. may have the highest number of certified green buildings in the country, but research by Environmental Policy Alliance suggests it might not be doing much good. The free-market group analyzed the first round of energy usage data released by city officials Friday and found that large, privately-owned buildings that received the green energy certification Leadership in Energy Design (LEED) actually use more energy than buildings that didn’t receive this green stamp of approval.LEED is the brainchild of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), a private environmental group.

WASHINGTON—The Obama administration is driving ahead with a dramatic reduction in sulfur in gasoline and tailpipe emissions, declaring that cleaner air will save thousands of lives per year at little cost to consumers. Public health groups and automakers cheered the new rules, finalized Monday by the Environmental Protection Agency, with some insisting they could prove to be President Barack Obama's signature environmental accomplishment in his second term. The oil and gas industry, meanwhile, panned the move, calling it gratuitous and accusing the government of grossly underestimating the increased cost at the pump. "The benefits far outweigh the costs," said EPA...

Apple chief executive Tim Cook has told climate-change deniers they should not buy shares in the company. Cook, 53, who took over the company shortly after Steve Jobs died of cancer in October 2011, was giving a talk at the 2014 Annual Meeting of Shareholders when he made the remarks. The National Centre for Public Policy had called for Apple not to put money in green energy projects which are not profitable. However, Cook said Apple did 'a lot of things for reasons besides profit motive' adding: 'We want to leave the world better than we found it.' He said:...

It looks like John Kerry's peace efforts may not garner him a Nobel Prize - so why not try Global Warming? "The science is unequivocal, and those who refuse to believe it are simply burying their heads in the sand. We don't have time for a meeting anywhere of the Flat Earth Society. And in a sense, climate change can now be considered another weapon of mass destruction, perhaps the world's most fearsome weapon of mass destruction." - John Kerry, in Jakarta on Feb 16, 2014 Our Secretary of State, John Kerry, sometimes known as "Ketchup Kerry," has serious ambitions...

It might seem strange to say it, but I am a global warming skeptic because of Carl Sagan. This might seem strange because Sagan was an early promoter of the theory that man-made emissions of carbon dioxide are going to fry the globe. But it’s not so strange when you consider the larger message that made Sagan famous. As with many people my age, Sagan’s 1980 series “Cosmos,” which aired on public television when I was eleven years old, was my introduction to science, and it changed my life. “Cosmos&88221; shared the latest developments in the sciences of evolution, astronomy,...

A co-founder of Greenpeace told lawmakers there is no evidence man is contributing to climate change, and said he left the group when it became more interested in politics than the environment. Patrick Moore, a Canadian ecologist and business consultant who was a member of Greenpeace from 1971-86, told members of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee environmental groups like the one he helped establish use faulty computer models and scare tactics in promoting claims man-made gases are heating up the planet. “There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of...

There is no scientific evidence that human activity is causing the planet to warm, according to Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore, who testified in front of a Senate committee on Tuesday. Moore argued that the current argument that the burning of fossil fuels is driving global warming over the past century lacks scientific evidence. He added that the Earth is in an unusually cold period and some warming would be a good thing. “There is no scientific proof that human emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) are the dominant cause of the minor warming of the Earth’s atmosphere over the past 100...

This article originally appeared on heartland.org.U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry sunk to climate McCarthyism last week, calling scientists at NASA, NOAA, Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Columbia, and other prestigious research institutions “shoddy scientists” and members of “the Flat Earth Society” because they don’t agree with Kerry and President Barack Obama on global warming issues. Fortunately for science, and unfortunately for Kerry, the Scientific Method encourages rather than blackballs critical inquiry and scientific debate. If that were not the case, people would indeed still believe the Earth is flat. Even so, more than 31,000 scientists have signed a summary of the...
