A week has passed since J.J. Vicari huddled underneath a desk while gunshots exploded in the classroom next door. Now, he is thinking about guns. Not about tightening gun laws, as President Obama urged after nine people were killed at the community college here. But about buying one for himself. “It’s opened my eyes,” said Mr. Vicari, 19. “I want to have a gun in the house to protect myself, to protect the people I’m with. I’m sure I’ll have a normal life and never have to go through anything like this, but I want to be sure.” Mr. Obama...
  • The Second Amendment Is One Supreme Court Justice from Repeal

In August, my colleague Charlie Cooke wrote an epic rant daring the Left to stop talking about repealing the Second Amendment and start doing it. Introduce the repeal to Congress, work it through the states, and tell the American people what you want to do — take from them a fundamental, enumerated right from the Bill of Rights. As Charlie eloquently outlines, repealing the Second Amendment is an impossible task. Even worse for the Left, it’s political suicide. But if the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges teaches us anything, it’s that the age of judicial supremacy means that...

Matt Drudge issued a dare to President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton Tuesday, during a rare radio interview with Alex Jones. Drudge was responding to Jones asserting that a civil war may ensue if politicians attempt to confiscate guns. “Well, because they are all armed themselves. Where they all have that security around them themselves. They don’t have to worry about [security],” said Drudge, who refused to be on camera. “I challenge Hillary, take away your Secret Service. Take it away now! Take away your Secret Service! Dismiss them. Have no security around you. Have no guns around you, Hillary....

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is blasting the father of accused Oregon shooter Chris Harper Mercer as a "complete failure" as a parent.Jindal said poor parenting and America's violent pop culture were to blame for the mass shooting last week, not the nation's gun laws, in a statement on Tuesday.“He’s a complete failure as a father [and] he should be embarrassed to even show his face in public,” said Jindal, a Republican presidential contender, about Ian Mercer, the father of Chris Harper Mercer. “He’s the real problem here."Jindal’s comments follow last week’s mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore....

Fresh off Hillary Clinton announcing she was going to do gun control without Congressional authority, President Barack Obama appears to be leaning the same way again. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Monday it was time to get serious about keeping guns from certain people. “The president has frequently pushed his team to consider a range of executive actions that could more effectively keep guns out of the hands of criminals and others who shouldn’t have access to them. That’s something that is ongoing here.” How this is different from the 2013 executive orders, no one is saying....
  • White House: Obama’s Trip To Oregon Will ‘Not be About Politics’

President Obama promises to politicize mass shootings as a way to demand more gun control. But the White House says that’s not what he’ll be doing as he visits the victims of the college shooting in Oregon on Friday. According to the White House, Obama will be traveling to meet and console the victims and no public remarks are expected. “I think in this instance, on Friday morning, the trip would not be about politics, but that trip would be about merely consoling the families who were so profoundly affected by that tragedy.” Earnest added that the visit was convenient...

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton threatened Monday to use unilaterally implement a new gun control plan if Congress does not pass her measures. Her push for further gun control measures comes in the wake of the tragic shooting at a community college campus in Oregon last week. The campaign platform includes a call for federal legislation mandating background checks on all private firearms transfers and sales. Clinton also wants to repeal the “Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.”

A prominent gun control advocate is calling for the resignation of the Oregon sheriff leading the investigation into the recent shooting who he labeled a pro-gun “conspiracy theorist.” Douglas County sheriff John Hanlin ruffled feathers with gun control groups after it came to light that he sent Vice President Joe Biden a letter in January 2013 threatening not to enforce stronger gun laws. According to reports, Hanlin also posted a conspiracy video on his Facebook page suggesting the government was behind the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting as well as the 9/11 terrorist attacks in a coordinated effort to “disarm...
  • The Left's Most Beloved Boogeyman: The NRA

The NRA is probably the far-left's most beloved boogeyman. Any time there is a tragedy involving a firearm, liberals from the top down are quick to blame the NRA and even insinuate that the organization is gleeful that people have died. Unsurprisingly, the left seems completely flummoxed as to why the NRA and other Second Amendment supporters oppose some gun laws that have been floated by liberals in the past few years, despite these laws having the support of a majority of Americans.

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump said Saturday that had teachers been armed at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, the deadly shooting there this week would not have been as tragic. Trump has previously cited mental health issues, not guns, as the biggest cause of shootings in the U.S. But his comments on Saturday are his most extensive and emotionally charged about firearms since he launched his campaign in June, as he spoke about his personal gun ownership and elicited his biggest applause of the afternoon in discussing gun rights. "By the way, it was a gun-free zone," he said at a...

The short blog for today...How much "Gun Violence" will Obama, Hillary and other Liberals be willing to inflict to prevent "Gun Violence" in America. If a law is passed that outlaws all firearms for the common populace and effectively repeals the 2nd Amendment, how shall it be enforced? (root word FORCE). Will armed police and/or military go house to house searching for the now illegal guns (using guns and even heavier weapons I presume)? This will by default, result in the complete destruction of entire The Constitution, not just the 2nd Amendment! Will “deadly force” be an option against those...

"... Clinton’s plan, her campaign said, will continue calls for universal background checks and for the ban of military-style assault weapons from the streets. In addition, it will call for a crackdown on the sale of guns on the Internet and at gun shows -- something Clinton will say she will even take executive action to do -- in order to ensure that all gun sellers are held to the same standards as gun stores. It will also push for legislation to prevent gun sales from going through without completed background checks (something currently dubbed a "Charleston Loophole"), and for...

The father of the Oregon shooter who ruthlessly murdered 9 people at a community college in Umpqua, Oregon, insists that his son isn’t to blame for shooting innocent victims, but rather, ‘guns’ are to blame. The man absolving his son of responsibility is Ian Mercer and he made the statements during a CNN interview. A report in the Daily Beast claims that Mr. Mercer abandoned his son at birth–a factor that the father did not mention during his anti-gun rant on television.

Atkins is certainly right that Democratic legislators won't act on gun control until voters are mobilized, but that puts the cart before the horse. You can't mobilize voters on an issue they don't really care much about in the first place. In this case, I think the folks who prioritize issue-area visibility and engagement probably have the better of the argument. Until voters who favor gun control feel as strongly as those who oppose it, all the field work in the world won't do any good.

Raymond Fryberg was found guilty of illegal possession of firearms by a jury in a federal trial.  The case serves as a warning for those who fail to contest domestic violence restraining orders.  The restraining order used to convict Fryberg was granted in 2002.  It was a permanent restraining order.  The order was requested by Fryberg's former girlfriend,  Jamie Gobin.  The two have a child in common. Originally, the restraining order was temporary.  There was a hearing to determine if the restraining order should be permanent.  Records show that Fryberg was served notice of the hearing, but he never...

In an item after the Oregon shootings, I quoted a reader from Florida saying that if you owned more than 10 guns yourself, you might be considered to have an “arsenal.” And just now on TV I heard the British father of the Oregon murderer asking why anyone, including his son, would want or need so many guns. Yesterday I quoted a reader who said, on the contrary, ten or more guns could be a perfectly reasonable collection for perfectly non-threatening citizens to have. On the “how much is enough” point, responses from two readers. First, on the similarities and...
