Atkins is certainly right that Democratic legislators won't act on gun control until voters are mobilized, but that puts the cart before the horse. You can't mobilize voters on an issue they don't really care much about in the first place. In this case, I think the folks who prioritize issue-area visibility and engagement probably have the better of the argument. Until voters who favor gun control feel as strongly as those who oppose it, all the field work in the world won't do any good.

I think a good measure of this feeling is because most people are smart enough to know it doesn't work. The same people arguing for it probably think prohibition prevented people from drinking. Indeed, I'd go the other way: Make the entire US a concealed carry (CC) zone. Take a look at how many mass murders occur in "gun free" zones, like schools and college campuses. A big sign saying "This is a CC zone." might make some lunatic think twice before drawing a gun.
If there were to be one national reform law concerning the ownership and use of personal sidearms, it would be to outlaw anything resembling a “gun-free zone”, which are just killing grounds for those who are not going to obey the sign anyway.
Localities that enact total or near-total bans on gun ownership have only themselves to blame for rising crimes and homicides where a gun was involved.
On this, the science is settled.

I and any firearms I own were not responsible for Oregon, Charleston, Newton et al just as I and any knives I own were not responsible for the OJ murders.
I reject the concept of collective guilt/responsibility because, as leftists have demonstrated repeatedly, their ‘cure’ involves treating me as a criminal. Worse, their ‘cure’ often allows criminals even more latitude while restricting my rights.

As a well known gun guy said, think about how you will be pictured in the crime scene photos. Would you rather be hiding in the fetal position full of bullet holes, or standing on a pile of empty brass surrounded by dead criminals?

But, but, if only legal citizens were banned from possessing legal firearms everywhere else, why then the criminals everywhere would suddenly stop getting illegal guns and murdering innocents and committing illegal acts. You know just like those previous amnesties stopped illegal immigration.
