  • Zero Knowledge Proof may Answer Computer Security Question

In the age of the Internet, it’s getting harder and harder to keep secrets. When you type in your password, there’s no telling who might be watching it go by. However, new research at Cornell may offer a pathway to more secure communications. The answer is to not send sensitive information at all. Rafael Pass, associate professor of computer science, has developed a new protocol, or set of rules, to create what computer scientists call a “zero knowledge proof.” “I think zero knowledge proofs are one of the most amazing notions in computer science,” Pass said. “What we have done...

Black mob violence is back in Minneapolis. Some say it never stopped, and if you depend on the local newspaper for information, you might think it never started. But Minneapolis police recently issued a “crime alert” for the downtown area following a rash of mob robberies and assaults. According to City Paper: “What we’re seeing in this pattern is victims walking downtown by themselves on a sidewalk outside, and they’re approached by a group of three to five African American males,” MPD spokeswoman Cyndi Barrington told City Pages. “The average age range of the [suspects] is late teens to early...

A meteor or comet impact near Quebec heaved a rain of hot melted rock along North America's Atlantic Coast about 12,900 years ago, a new study claims. Scientists have traced the geochemical signature of the BB-sized spherules that rained down back to their source, the 1.5-billion-year-old Quebecia terrane in northeastern Canada near the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. At the time of the impact, the region was covered by a continental ice sheet, like Antarctica and Greenland are today. "We have provided evidence for an impact on top of the ice sheet," said study co-author Mukul Sharma, a geochemist at Dartmouth...

Speaker John A. Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 House Republican, quickly joined Mr. Boehner to say he also backed Mr. Obama. “Understanding that there are differing opinions on both sides of the aisle, it is up to President Obama to make the case to Congress and to the American people that this is the right course of action, and I hope he is...

Minneapolis, MN – After President Obama’s announcement that he will seek congressional approval for military attacks against Syria, anti-war activists around the county have been going all out to stop a wider U.S. war. Commenting on President Obama’s decision to have a war vote in Congress, Joe Iosbaker of the Chicago Anti-War Committee stated, “The U.S. has suffered a setback in their drive toward war with Syria. The opposition in the U.N., the vote in the British Parliament and the demonstrations across the country here has won a small victory for the anti-war movement. Now President Obama is going to...

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama this week plans to urge reluctant world leaders to support a U.S.-led military strike against Syria as he attends a global summit in Russia and makes a stop in Sweden. His three-day overseas trip comes as his administration seeks authorization from Congress. Top lawmakers signalled support Tuesday after meeting with Obama, while France said it will wait for Congress' decision before any military action of its own. Obama's presence at the Group of 20 gathering in Russia is bound to bring questions about Syria, recently leaked U.S. surveillance programs and especially his tense relationship with...

S.C. Sen. Lee Bright (R-Spartanburg) is ramping up the rhetoric in his bid against U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (RINO-S.C.). The social conservative bomb thrower – who previously (and aptly) labeled Graham a “community organizer for the Muslim Brotherhood” – now has his sights on U.S. President Barack Obama. But is he reaching too far in an effort to throw red meat to the Palmetto State’s GOP base? In a wide-ranging piece on the Palmetto State’s U.S. Senate race published by CNN’s Peter Hamby late Friday, Bright took off the gloves against Obama – saying he has “certain embedded hostilities to...

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (RINO-S.C.) is hugely unpopular with a sizable chunk of South Carolina Republican voters for the innumerable left-of-center positions he’s taken over the years. Fiscal conservatives and supporters of privacy rights are peeved at Graham for supporting tax hikes and domestic spying – while many rank-and-file establishment Republicans are livid with him for supporting liberal activist judges and a lax immigration policy. That’s why Graham is refusing to meet with limited government groups – and why he appears to be choosing his “Republican” audiences very carefully. According to one limited government advocate, Graham supporters are trying to...

Chris Crane has been troubled by Obama’s actions that resemble a dictator—ignoring constitutional law while making his own laws through policy. Chris Crane is not alone—many Americans share the same concerns and wonder what it will take for Congress to act. “And it doesn’t matter what type of legislation we pass, until we address that problem, we will never have an immigration system that works,” he added. “As long as one person can act like a dictator and ignore the law and make his own laws through policy, we will never have a system that works.”

Japan is to invest hundreds of millions of dollars into building a frozen wall around the Fukushima nuclear plant to stop leaks of radioactive water. Government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said an estimated 47bn yen ($473m, £304m) would be allocated. ... Water is now being pumped in to cool the reactors, but storing the resultant large quantities of radioactive water has proved a challenge for plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco). Under the government plan, a wall of frozen earth will be created around the reactors using pipes filled with coolant to prevent groundwater coming into contact with contaminated water...

It's been an interesting week, to say the least. Obama, fresh from his personal takedown of Osama Bin Laden, (busssshtttttt – excuse me, little sneeze there) - felt like he needed to get back in the Saddle and take Bashir al-Assad down a couple of pegs. Epic military exploits on the battlefield, make a Commander-in-chief hungry for more. He ordered a contingent of warships over to the Eastern Mediterranean including the USS Mahan and the USS Ramage, to stand by for orders to launch cruise missiles - which with some luck might miss the Presidential palace, but kill some civilians...
  • The beautiful row houses once part of sprawling tenements that illustrate Baltimore's urban decay

One of the architectural quirks of certain cities on the eastern seaboard of the U.S. is the solo row house. Standing alone, in some of the worst neighborhoods, these nineteenth century structures were once attached to similar row houses that made up entire city blocks. Time and major demographic changes have resulted in the decay and demolition of many such blocks. Occasionally, one house is spared - literally cut off from its neighbors and left to the elements with whatever time it has left. Still retaining traces of its former glory, the last house standing is often still occupied.

PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA -- Former NBA star Dennis Rodman landed Tuesday in North Korea for what he called a trip to hang out with authoritarian leader Kim Jong Un, have a good time and bridge some cultural gaps — but not to be a diplomat. The trip by the flamboyant basketballer — his second to North Korea — comes days after Pyongyang rejected a visit by a U.S. envoy who had hoped to bring home an American missionary jailed there, Kenneth Bae. Speaking to reporters ahead of his flight to Pyongyang, Rodman declined to say whether he would seek Bae's...

A man roused from his sleep by an intruder hid in a bathroom and called police before confronting the intruder and shooting him in his home in west Albuquerque on Thursday afternoon, police said. The wounded intruder was able to make his way to the resident’s backyard, where he collapsed on the homeowner’s lawn, Albuquerque police spokesman Simon Drobik said. The suspected intruder was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital in critical condition, but he was expected to survive, Drobik said. No identities were being released. A neighbor said the resident appeared to be middle-aged. Police were also looking...
