Is Prayer/Veneration/Worship to Mary Biblical?
self | 12-14-14 | ealgeone

The reason for this article is to determine if the worship/veneration given to Mary by the catholic church is justified from a Biblical perspective. This will be evaluated using the Biblical standard and not man’s standard.

Here's the NT definition of worship.

προσκυνέω

HELPS Word-studies

4352 proskynéō (from 4314 /prós, "towards" and kyneo, "to kiss") – properly, to kiss the ground when prostrating before a superior; to worship, ready "to fall down/prostrate oneself to adore on one's knees" (DNTT); to "do obeisance" (BAGD).

Compare what catholics do before Mary.

It's worship.

Man can redefine it anyway they want to. It's worship based on the Word.

You are correct of course and I do choose to discount it, thanks. Forgive me for not being aware of what theological degrees you hold that make you qualified to determine whether Catholic doctrine “squares” with your biblical references.

Could you find me the title of the last article that “espouses the virtues of Catholicism while putting down non Catholics” I would like to see it. Since there are a”lots” I’m sure you can find me one.

I am Catholic and I love the Bible. For it gives us John 6:53 which of course does “square” with Catholic tradition.

OY>As a former Catholic who saw it firsthand, it's worship.

Here's a link to the Catechism. Prove it.

Yah'shua is not a roman catholic !

Yah'shua is not a Christian !

Yah'shua did not come to start the Roman "church"

He did not come to start "Christianity".

He came to preach His WORD.

Yah'shua was, is and will always be a Jew !

He will return and rule and reign from Jerusalem
on the throne of King David.

Paul was not ever not a Jew.

Paul was a Jew who recognized Yah'shua as the Jewish Messiah.

Be Blessed that you have been permitted to be grafted into the true vine.

I suggested an in-depth review of Romans 11.

How do you read Romans 11:15 ?

Of course it is, but no one writes articles about that. My comment was directed at the behavior of people who write articles about whether something or other is “Biblical”. Invariably they write articles about things they regard as un-Biblical and invariably “Biblical” means exactly what I described in my second paragraph.

The whole content of the Nicene Creed is Biblical, as was shown quite ably by St. Cyril of Jerusalem in his Catechetical (and Mystagogical) Homilies, provided one doesn’t load one’s notion of what is “Biblical” with hermeneutic preconceptions.

Of course, when one extends the creed to the clauses about the Holy Spirit added by the Second Ecumenical Council, only the original version we Orthodox maintain — no filioque — is Biblical.

“True. I keep wondering about what Jesus is thinking when somebody disses his momma.”

Folksy, sentimental hogwash. It’s a classic Satanic ruse: build a lie around something “good” and sit back while those who attack the lie appear to hate the “good”.

Mary remains unscathed in her own salvation, and in her biblical testimony. I hold her in high esteem as I do Moses, Abraham, Rahab, John, Paul, etc. Saying that she cannot hear prayer, per revealed Scripture, is not “dissing” her. It is attacking the Lie.

If she were divine she would not be able to pray — who does divinity pray to?

Ask Jesus.

Tell me do you know greek?

Is John 6:53 not a biblical verse?

Have you declared it null and void because you disregard it? This of course highlights your bias and without evidence to the contrary your lack of qualifications to understand that which you claim to be expert.

If Protestants would only read the last sentence of the Hail Mary (no it is not a long bewildered pass in football). Mary can do nothing for us but pray.

Have you read the catholic teachings on Mary? There's tons of them. They give her a lot of power not attributed to her in the Bible.

.Mediatrix

We constantly seek for help from Heaven - the sole means of effecting anything - that our labours and our care may obtain their wished for object. We deem that there could be no surer and more efficacious means to this end than by religion and piety to obtain the favour of the great Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, the guardian of our peace and the minister to us of heavenly grace, who is placed on the highest summit of power and glory in Heaven, in order that she may bestow the help of her patronage on men who through so many labours and dangers are striving to reach that eternal city. …..showing that the Catholic Church has always, and with justice, put all her hope and trust in the Mother of God. SUPREMI APOSTOLATUS OFFICIO ENCYCLICAL OF POPE LEO XIIION DEVOTION OF THE ROSARY

Based on this why do catholics need Christ?

Catholics think Mary is special because she gave said yes to God, gave birth to Jesus and raised him. She is honored for this just like some surely give great respect to your mother for raising such an outstanding Protestant as yourself.

But why wouldn’t you just pray to Jesus Christ as He is all you need? It is not Biblical to call on any intercessor BUT Him.

In the Bible all who believe in Jesus Christ are saints. It is no more “special” than that. You will know who Jesus Christ is when you read the Word of the Bible as He IS the Word.

It saddens me that the Catholic church leads people astray and away from the simple, life giving truth that you need nothing (further, should not seek anything else) but the life giving blood of Jesus Christ.

I don’t hate you....at all.

but let me ask you, isn’t you that came to a thread someone else posted? If you don’t want to be part of the discussion, why join in?

It is commanded of us by God to spread the Gospel truth. Some things the catholic church teaches are not the truth.

Indeed, you have said it best. “ the life giving blood of Jesus Christ”

Catholics receive this every time they go to mass. Do not be sad for us. We are blessed.
