Why would anyone become Catholic?

Why would intelligent, successful people give up their careers, alienate their friends, and cause havoc in their families...to become Catholic? Indeed, why would anyone become Catholic?

As an evangelist and author who recently threw my own life into some turmoil by deciding to enter the Catholic Church, I've faced this question a lot lately. That is one reason I decided to make this documentary; it's part of my attempt to try to explain to those closest to me why I would do such a crazy thing.

Convinced isn't just about me, though. The film is built around interviews with some of the most articulate and compelling Catholic converts in our culture today, including Scott Hahn, Francis Beckwith, Taylor Marshall, Holly Ordway, Abby Johnson, Jeff Cavins, Devin Rose, Matthew Leonard, Mark Regnerus, Jason Stellman, John Bergsma, Christian Smith, Kevin Vost, David Currie, Richard Cole, and Kenneth Howell. It also contains special appearances by experts in the field of conversion such as Patrick Madrid and Donald Asci.

Ultimately, this is a story about finding truth, beauty, and fulfillment in an unexpected place, and then sacrificing to grab on to it. I think it will entertain and inspire you, and perhaps even give you a fresh perspective on an old faith.

...”CATHOLIC document called the Bible”.....

Nah....that came from God....to Moses and the Jews long before the catholic church laid claim. Besides I suspect your right God’s word is seen as a “document” by many catholics. When it is clearly His written word to us to be read and understood as from Him and used by Him for our benefit.

The early protestants and today’s protestants are
entirely different animals. The early protestants were basically still Catholic in their worship, from vestments to liturgy. Today’s protestants have no liturgy to speak of, wear no vestments, and have absolutely no authority, other than themselves.

I never knew "vestments" were so important. I thought belief in and obedience to Him trumped fancy dress.

You never answered the question about whether Peter wore flashy pope-robes and a big hat. How about living in palatial rooms with gold fixtures? Is that how Jesus lived on Earth? Why doesn't the ranking Catholic live as our Lord demonstrated?

You said Catholicism was “the Church established by Jesus through Peter.” If this were true then the logical conclusion is that Church has gone far astray.

Protestants can’t change history.

But they are sure giving it a good effort.

Bible verses from that CATHOLIC document called the Bible.

What is this “CATHOLIC document” you keep talking about?

Does it come with flashy, oppulent robes and a cool tall hat and a big gilded stick?

When did Peter get his flashy robes and bling? Would you tell us where these vain traditions started because they are NOT of Jesus!

Matthew 8:20 - “And Jesus says to him, ‘The foxes have holes and the birds of the heaven have nests, but the Son of Man does not have a place where He may lay His head’.”

If that is true, they why in the world don’t y’all back up your statements with God’ words. Sure must not be too important to some. There were no Catholics back then. I believe that word came to be used centuries later. From Catholic sites I have been to over he past few years, edicts and statements by leaders are more important than the Bible. I trust the Bible not man.

You need to take a look at how Jewish priests dressed during the time of Jesus. But do me a favor, don’t reply to this post. I’m tired of the utter stupity on these forums.

Well they have a need to appear as “royalty”....which as we now know “hides” other things the priesthood chooses to do behind closed doors.

The appearances are intimidating to many catholics....which is the intent IMO. To appear as “High Priests” of God is significant for them otherwise they would have great difficulty keeping their membership, who also want the pomp and be dazzled by.

Catholics have their Pomp, Ceremony, Necromantic Practices, Traditions, Rituals, Superstitions and Ancestor Worship.

They’ve got no time nor energy for The Word.

Still, leaving Him out has left an empty place. Fortunately there’s a handy Pagan Goddess to take His place.

Protestants can’t change history.

But the Marxist revisionists among us have and do change even daily history on the fly.

I enjoy learning of new discoveries that validate the Old Testament. From reading this thread, I don't get the confirmation that many RCs are very interested in research and learning the real roots of their worship practices, way before Jesus was born.

You trust the Bible because Catholics made it available for you to read. Without the Catholic Church you would still be praying to the sun gods.

You mean the same guys who opposed Jesus in every way and made sure He was killed?

However, it's ironic when someone complains about "stupity" when they can't spell "stupidity." It seems to go back to that whole "dust mote vs plank" argument.

I mean, to be convincing to a non-RC, wouldn't it be good to hear such an important part of theology from the lips of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself?

Why? seriously we quote scripture to you all the time and you claim literal words are figurative or metaphor.

Mat_26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it; and he gave to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

Mar_14:22 And as they were eating, he took bread, and when he had blessed, he brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take ye: this is my body.

Luk_22:19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

1Co_11:24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.

Joh_6:51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.

Joh_6:53 Jesus therefore said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have not life in yourselves.

There you have Jesus own words and Paul reiterating them.

...and practicing detestable practices such as kissing and frolicking about with desiccated human remains and bowing before idols of stone, wood and metal made by the hands of man. Wait...what???!!!

It's one of those truisms, belittle the intelligence of another online and you're all but certain to make yourself look less than intelligent in doing so. It happens so frequently, I've taken to calling it instant internet karma, lol.

God has a sense of humor; particularly when dealing with those who take themselves too seriously.

...”You need to take a look at how Jewish priests dressed during the time of Jesus”....

Does that mean I then should dress as the population did then as well?

Jesus is the great High Priest now and did away with the Priesthood....the New Covenant changed all that as He took His office over us all. ...He removed the curtain of the Jewish Priesthood who only had admittance before Him.....now 'all' can come directly to God through His son Jesus.... “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.... 'At that moment'... the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom”........ (Matthew 27:50-51

God was through with that temple 'and its religious system',... the temple and Jerusalem were left “desolate” (destroyed by the Romans) in A.D. 70, just as Jesus prophesied in Luke 13..." Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord."

As long as the temple stood, it signified the continuation of 'the Old Covenant'. As is written...."By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one 'obsolete' and 'outdated'...Hebrew 8
