Baptist Church Cancels Gungor Event Over Views on Bible; ...
The Christian Post ^ | 8-7-14 | Leonardo Blair

Highlighting that a Baptist church recently canceled one their events due to a swirling controversy over their views on the Bible, Christian couple Michael and Lisa Gungor of the Grammy nominated, Dove award-winning band Gungor affirmed their faith in God Wednesday and insisted that "NO REASONABLE PERSON takes the entire Bible completely literally."

In their most recent explanation of their theological position, Gungor tweeted late Wednesday night: "For those who heard rumblings of apostasy or scandal, we'd like to clear the air. Fundamentalists, 'I'm with you.'"

Included with the tweet was a link to a blog post, titled "I'm With You," from Michael Gungor addressing the ballooning controversy and apologizing to fans who may have been under the impression that they were fundamentalist Christians.

"I am sorry to any fundamentalists that have felt confused or tricked or something by us in this issue. We have always tried to be upfront about our wrestling with doubts and questions of faith," Michael Gungor wrote in his closing statements of the post.

So now people who trust Scripture are being labeled as “fundamentalists”?

I guess I’m a “fundamentalist” because I trust Scripture.

Fundamentalist:
A term created during the turn-of-the-20th-century Protestant church splits to define those who held to the “fundamentals” of Christianity—the inerrancy of the Bible, the virgin birth of Jesus and his literal resurrection from the dead. The term is now considered pejorative. (Wheaton College philosophy professor Alvin Plantinga famously observed, “The full meaning of the term...can be given by something like ‘stupid sumbitch whose theological opinions are considerably to the right of mine.’”)

No, “literally” means that you interpret Scripture according to its various genres.

Poetry, history, allegory, etc.

Jesus was referred to as a “lamb” — of course we don’t interpret that as meaning that He has four wooly legs.

Some folks just need a rectal craniotomy when they start trying to redefine words such as literal. The Bible is the inspired Word of God. (period) Humans can have doubts and question all they want but when it comes down to it the is only one Way and one Truth. Life (especially eternal life) is not so many shades of grey.

Color me cynical but in my opinion they have stooped to pop artist antics. Create a fervor as a new album comes out to peak interest. Otherwise why say anything?

I do not listen to Christian bands because I believe in a sense they are harlots, but I agree with him on some points.

Calling a scripture literal does not make it literal, was the earth created in six literal days?

Do we believe or disbelieve what the Bible says or just what we think it says?

Taking the Bible completely literally would mean believing that a literal beast is going to rise out of the sea in the last days.

One already has! I saw it in a movie!

I'll agree that there's plenty in scripture that's hard to swallow. My typical response to folks like the Gungors is, 'OK you're skeptical, but COULD this have happened?'

From my reading it appears that the accounts of Adam and Eve and a global flood are meant to be taken literally; I'm just not certain how you get around a literal interpretation. OTOH some of the accounts in John's Revelation are from a vision, which leads me to view them differently.

I trust scripture as being the inspired Wird of God, however I have a hard time with the timelines particularly when there are fossils dating wayyyy back. I could see maybe some misinterpretation or lack of understanding from the prophets in trying to comprehend what they saw. It would be like trying to describe a plane when the only thing you’ve seen flying in the sky are birds. I think we dwell too much on the smaller things failing to see the bigger message sometimes.

God Our Mother includes an apophatic contemplative meditation. Apophatic disciplines seek to push beyond language and rational thinking in the context of God's Holiness, and can be very powerful. For this reason, we recommend that spiritual practices like apophaticism are best moderated through scripture, tradition, and some form of spiritual community.

http://www.worldmag.com/2014/08/gungor_drifts_from_biblical_orthodoxy

The second EP, God Our Mother, supports moving beyond the Scriptural formulation of God as Father, since that allegedly limits an appreciation of God’s fullness: “To know only God the Father would be like only knowing daytime, and never knowing night.” Apophatic Mysticism—the practice of reciting phrases that negate each other—is offered as a way to grow beyond language and gender limitations to experience God more fully. In an extended track, they meditate on the phrase “God is my father” and move on to “God is not my father.” And finally the breakthrough: “God is not, not my father.”

Gungor is clearly still animated and inspired by the person of Jesus. But it was Jesus who upheld the authority of Scripture and whose recipe for divine connection was fairly simple: “Our Father, who is in Heaven, hallowed be your name …”

Calling them a “Christian couple” as they appear to be denying the Bible and the Gospel as well.

They’ve made up their own religion.

A couple of sinful, imperfect human beings arrogantly think they can judge the accuracy of the Bible.

Like that’s going to end well....
