Retired Army General Wants Egypt's St. Catherine's Monastery Demolished

The holy monastery of St. Catherine at Mount Sinai

A retired army general says he has filed a court case pushing for Egypt's historic Saint Catherine's Monastery to be demolished and its Greek monks deported on the grounds that they pose a threat to national security.

In May 2012, Ahmed Ragai Attiya obtained 71 administrative orders regarding the demolition of the monastery's multiple churches, monk cells, gardens and other places of interest on the grounds, which he claims were all built in 2006 and thus not historic, according to Ihab Ramzy, the monastery's lawyer.

However, in an interview with private channel ONTV on Thursday, Attiya said that he has now used the 71 orders to file an official demolition suit with Ismailiya's Administrative Court against the monastery and 10 of the Egyptian authorities concerned, including the president, ministers of tourism and antiquities and the governor of South Sinai, where Saint Catherine's is located.

In the same ONTV interview, Attiya levelled a host of accusations against the monastery's monks, alleging that they have changed the names of landmarks in the surrounding area and tried to hide an underground water source known as Moses' Well (Oyun Moussa).

He also took issue with them supposedly raising the Greek flag on Egyptian land and turning the site into an area occupied by foreigners, both which he says are a breach of national security and Egyptian sovereignty.

Most of the Saint Catherine's 37 monks are Greek.

Attiya, who in 1978 founded the Egyptian army's special operations unit, made similar accusations regarding the monastery at the Journalists Syndicate in downtown Cairo in February.

The Monastery is, what, 1,200 years old? Lies for the sake of lying seems in vogue. Muslims, Russians, Venezuelans, etc.

Over a decade ago, IIRC, the Taliban demolished a pair of ancient mountain carvings in Afghanistan - I can't recall at the moment which faith those artifacts belonged to . This proposal is squarely in keeping with their gratuitously destructive tradition, but this is an active monastery.

We, as Christians and Jews, indeed as any of non-Islamic profession, are facing the same onslaught our ancient ancestors thwarted so many centuries ago.

Would we had Charles Martel with us now. Instead we have a pack of hedonists, Marxists, and secular humanists running our government.

Turn these bastards out or we are doomed!

St. Catherine's was established by the Byzantine emperor Justinian in the 500's, Well before there even was a sick mental aberration known as islam. This "general" is a lying babbling idiot. Surprise.

Retired General, I’ve got to think he doesn’t hold much sway. They have had Arab Nationalists and Muslim Extremists in the Government. I think they have tried largely to get those people out of positions of power.

This is no big thing for them - they're systematically exterminating the oldest communities in Christendom day-by-day as the Western World stands by and does nothing.

Doesn’t this monastery have a permission letter signed by Mohammed himself? And does the monastery also have a mosque built on one wall?

This ancient Monastery is the ‘home’ of one of the most - if not THE most - famous paintings of Jesus - the inestimably beautiful “PANTOCRATOR”, my favorite of all the iconic depictions of Jesus.

As a portrait artist and a ‘student’ of the Shroud of Turin since the 1960’s, even before the STURP team went to Turin in 1978 - starting research that continues today.

To me, the artist who made this icon obviously used the image on the Shroud as the model for the face of Jesus. there were thousands of icons painted in the following hundreds of years that carried this depiction of Jesus,

Iconic art is a separate form of painting with it's own very strict formulaic rules. they were painted on wood using the “encaustic” form of painting, which involved using hot wax. They were/are usually small and in the form of a triptych that could be opened like a hinged 3-piece picture frame to sit on a surface. All churches had them.

These iconic paintings , were also painted, large, on monastery and cathedral ceilings. this one, always referred to as “THE Pantocrator” is not only the most beautiful of them all, but the earliest known, painted in the 6-7th century. This must NEVER be destroyed.

THE PANTOCRATOR

In the link below, you can see examples of how this painting became the ‘FACE” used for hundreds of years afterwords. But the artist who did the original, to me. was the most talented painter of them all. Some of the later artists did also have access to the Shroud, itself, as witnessed by their addition of wisps of hair on the forehead - from what they thought was hair in the Shroud. However, as modern study of the cloth has discovered, the ‘wisps’ are actually blood that ran down his forehead. (But to me, those early painters mistake is only one further witness that the Shroud existed hundreds of years before da Vinci.) (These icons also have the correct hairstyle for Jesus, pulled back - but I won't touch on why here.)

Not sure - I thought the ones I was referencing were large exterior sculptures - like Mt. Rushmore - I could well be wrong on that - but whatever they were - what a heinous, barbaric act!

Many years ago, we had a calendar with images of Covered Bridges of Pennsylvania, most of which are no longer in existence. One of those bridges, which was still extant the last time I was up there, was the bridge over Conodoguinet Creek in South-Central PA, where my Father once owned land. I drove over that bridge many times.

The legend on the calendar stated "The hands and brains of soulless men destroy what Time will never build again!"

per my post # 12, one of the iconic paintings that added 'wisps' of hair on Jesus' forehead, mistaking rivulets of blood on the shroud for hair.
