I'm not a biblical scholar and it's been a long time since I was first taught to beware of false prophets and false prophecy, so I'll ask. Do these teachings apply and if so, would they apply specifically to people like Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and the so-called Book of Mormon?

I have my flame suit on.

Seriously now.... false prophet? Heck YES! “The” false prophet... I haven’t a clue. We ARE to “beware”, nonetheless.

Merry Christmas, Jim and Sheila!

When you read Matthew 24, Christ Jesus speaks of the signs of the times, etc. At least three times in that chapter, He mentions false teachers, Prophets, etc. He also mentions the earthquakes, weather, etc. So, mentioning the false teachers, etc. three times must mean that He felt that was very important to point out three times in 20 something verses.

Mormons aren’t bad people. They just worship a false prophet. Jesus is second place. They haven’t started to blow stuff up yet in the name of Smith.

Jesus has brought many individuals to Himself through the diverse religions across this planet. That does not mean that all of those various practitioners were sent by Him, or that their dogmas are God approved.

Many of my father’s family are Mormon’s. But, I rejected the religion because it taught that if we are baptized for our ancestors they will go to Heaven.

I alone am responsible for my choices in life, good and bad. We are all given the choice of accepting Christ in our lifetime in many different ways. The Gospel has been spread throughout this world over the centuries and, IMHO, all have been touched by Him somehow.

There are Mormons who are Christians and will see the Kingdom of Heaven. The are also Christians, in name only, who do not “take up their cross and follow” and will not see the gates of Heaven.

I ain’t perfect. I rely on His justice and mercy only.

Some may not agree. So be it.

Yes, Jim, the do refer to Mormon prophets and other modern day ‘prophets’, those who pervert the Bible to lead people away from Christ (even atheists).

Jim, many years ago, when I was a teenager, I didn’t know my Bible, I was only a nominal Christian, and I converted to Mormonism. I didn’t know any better and I was lied to by my Mormon friends and the Mormon missionaries about their teachings. Only after I was a member and really immersed and had a desire to really study and understand their theology (Mormons don’t have anything like systematic theology - they can’t) did I start to compare Mormonism to the Bible. I took quotes like this one very seriously:

“Take up the Bible, compare the religion of the Latter-day Saints with it and see if it will stand the test”
(Brigham Young, May 18, 1873, Journal of Discourses, vol. 16, p. 46.)

Young was dead wrong, not a single unique Mormon doctrine can be proven with the Bible and every one of them can be proven false just using the Bible.

When I really started to read the Bible I began to see that Mormonism is not only false, but spiritually dangerous.

I really appreciate the freedom for the truth that is allowed on the Religion forum. It was people like those here, who challenged me, who got me mad enough to prove them wrong on Mormonism, who got me to try to prove the Bible was fallible (Mormon doctrine) and yet could prove Mormon doctrine ‘true’, that led me out of Mormonism and to Christ and for that I am eternally grateful.

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:18).

What does Islam have in common with Mormonism, concerning their founding?

Gal 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Gal 1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any [man] preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
Gal 1:11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
Gal 1:12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught [it], but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Mormonism is simply not Christian. Mormonism is a cult. Mormon’s believe they can become gods through their own power, which is distinctly anti-Christ-like.

Yes,

If our country were to elect a Mormon, we would be undone by God.

I am positive about this.

The fact that we would even consider it certainly has us
under God's wrath.

Of course those scriptures apply to anyone who tries to pervert the Gospel.

An even more appropriate reference is from Galatians 1:8-9 and its context:

“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!”

If you believe the Bible to be the Word of God, then yes, it applies to all men who falsely claim to be a prophet.

As another FReeper pointed out some time ago...

Christ said that upon His return, it would be for all the world to see, not secretly in the woods with a teenage boy.

I don’t for one minute believe that either of the two you mentioned or their successors were/are prophets. Besides both of the ones mentioned failed the basic tests of a prophet...they both gave wrong revelations.

The Bible says you don’t get do overs in that category...sorry.

Merry Christmas to you and yours Jim and thank you for all you do.
