Based on a casual reading of the polls, Donald Trump looks to have smooth sailing to the Republican presidential nomination in 2024 and the chance to erase the stink of losing to Joe Biden that he so covets. But if that’s the case, why does Trump seem so panicky these days? Simple: Trump is in trouble, and — when you dig into the numbers — his grip on the GOP nomination is getting more tenuous. It is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) who has all the momentum.

The left has spent six years demonizing Trump. How many times did you see him called a Nazi, rapist, homophobe, etc.,etc,,etc, Trump was the pariah of the world until they hung the target on Putin’s back in March. They fear Trump for good reason. They will do anything to stop him. What they can do is substantial. The media is chiefly responsible for Trump getting the nomination in 2016. The media gave him double the coverage of the other candidates combined. Trump, of all people should realize this. Of course, you don’t let the media make the choice for you. It’s a typical GOP mistake to discount facts like this. That’s how we end up with not only Trump but also Mittens and Dole. “DU much”, huh?
Fearlessness is good, but it's not enough. Guile and insight is necessary too. The opponents of the right have some of both. Trump had some too, but not enough.

Reagan took control of the executive branch immediately, and kept the leftists within it in check. Trump fumbled with the bureaucracy for months, if not years. He didn't know how to grab the wheel and take command of the ship. Reagan did.
Trump's public face was a delight. Reagan wasn't out front as often as Trump, and I have to think that's because he was too busy being effective.

DeSantis won’t run against Trump. 2024 is Trump’s race if he wants it.
That said, DeSantis is a great governor and will make a great president. You mentioned Pompeo, who would also make a good president, but 2024 belongs to Trump.
Aside from them, no one else even makes a blip on the radar.

Trump still gets enamoured too often of the gold bathroom fixtures type. E.g. his daughter, Kari Lake in Az, Blake Masters in Az the flamboyant, the glib and the sycophant. IMO, his superficiality in that regard is his Achilles Heel. However, if he runs on dumping all illegals out and instituting mandatory e-Verify we might forgive him. And I was a Trumper in 15 and still am at 98%.

Knowing Trump, he may have gotten it. I don't object to anything he's doing, he seems to be making a lot of very good moves. If he doesn't run out of time, he has a chance to come back. I hope he succeeds.

Trump unfortunately thinks that the clot shots were a great achievement of his administration. DeSantis says quite accurately that the FDA works for Big Pharma. That is a compelling reason to prefer DeSantis as the nominee in 2024. Thank you President Trump, but I want President DeSantis bringing the corrupt FDA under control.

Trump should have a list. A proven list of loyalists. We do that with the Supreme Court. All the recent justices were selected from the Federalist Society. Apparently that was effective because we ended up overturning Roe vs Wade.
So Trump needs to do the same with the Federal bureaucracy. Assume everyone is a worthless RINO and cannot be counted on.

I don’t think he had any other choice politically on COVID. He didn’t have enough political strength in Congress to simply fire Fauci, Brix and others. He basically trusted the “experts” like all our initial reactions. Trump also was victim to the utter lack of professionalism by these “experts” and the “experts “ in the military and the rest of the bureaucracy. To make matters worse his ego seems to prevent him from admitting he was wrong on this. On COVID he wasn’t so much wrong as scammed. He should find a way to say that.
Still in my estimation he out-Reaganed Reagan! Best president in my lifetime and deserves a 2nd term if he wants it and is up to the rigors to get there.
