The world over, people feel lied to, unheard, and pushed aside. They no longer have any faith in their leaders. They’re lashing out against their governments and health officials, in some cases by rejecting the COVID-19 vaccine.
Populism, a political expression of this mistrust, is correlated with vaccine hesitancy. In a 2019 study, Jonathan Kennedy, a sociologist at Queen Mary University of London, found a significant association between the percentage of people who voted for populist parties within a country and the percent who believe vaccines are not important or effective. Past research has similarly found that populists around the world are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories about issues such as vaccination and global warming. “Vaccine hesitancy and political populism are driven by similar dynamics: a profound distrust in elites and experts,” Kennedy writes. In politics, populism manifests as supporting parties and figures outside the mainstream, like Donald Trump or UKIP. But populism can be expressed differently in other spheres. “In public health, there’s this growing distrust and anger towards doctors, also towards pharmaceutical companies. Medical populism is skepticism that's uninformed,” Kennedy told me.
Medical literature reveals a strong connection between vaccine hesitancy and distrust of pharmaceutical companies, government officials, and health-care workers, even among health-care workers themselves. Studies and polls from various countries over the past two years show that people who are reluctant to get a COVID-19 vaccine are more likely to vote for politically extreme parties and to distrust the government, and to cite their distrust as a reason for not getting the shot. In a recent German poll, half of the unvaccinated respondents had voted for the far-right populist party, Alternative für Deutschland, in the recent election.

In the last few decades, vaccine hesitancy was tied to the left.At least four of the top 5 states that had the highest vaccination hesitancy were blue states.
Common sense.
Our current “leaders” told me not to take the Trump vaccine. Am I not supposed to listen to them? I’m confused (snark).
Every day I think I a new propaganda ad for the Jim Jones Juice.
bingo!
It doesn’t confer immunity. It offers temporary benefits, which is at best, a recreational drug without the recreational benefits. Like a recreational drug, the first dose/s are free. Like a recreational drug, it has drug pushers.
Let us put this to music: “All we are saying is give distrust a chance.”
Number one reason: We don’t trust the government and pharmaceuticals because we have been lied to at every turn. From the morbidity rate to the safety and efficacy of the vaccine to the outpatient treatment of the disease.
Common sense for sure.
Why take an experimental gene therapy with no long term safety or efficacy studies, to defend against a virus that can be stopped with vitamins D3, C, and Zinc?
Especially when the lethality of the virus is equal to or less than the seasonal flu?
Hard no on the vax, thanks.
Oh yes. It’s the Populists who are aberrated and crazy. Never the totalitarian elite snobs and their lackies at The Atlantic.
To name just a few reasons....
“Medical literature reveals a strong connection between vaccine hesitancy and distrust of pharmaceutical companies”
For me, at least, they’re confusing cause with effect. I saw a disconnect between the results of the research, and their claims, and then became distrustful.
Maybe it’s just me, but I begin to distrust people who respond to honest questions with evasiveness, rhetorical fallacies, invective, censorship, threats, and punishments.
Lack of safety testing.Poor Data, Fauci corruption.
Yep....if you’re against the vax then you’re a far right-winger filled with misinformation.
Lie to people hundreds of times over a few decades and they suddenly don;t trust you anymore. Weird.
And we kept hearing “We’re all in this together” except we really aren’t. We lose incomes, livelihoods, businesses, etc. THEY get rich. If we are really all in this together, Pfizer and Moderna should release all the patents and give it away without profit. They should be happy to build this vaccine at cost. We are all in this together, right?
