Only 1/3rd of Americans Supported the American Revolution?
History books | 1/14/21 | self

One third of the nation wants red states and blue states to be separate countries. Only 1/3 of the people wanted a Revolutionary War 250 years ago. I believe the numbers will grow as the tyranny grows.

It was a low percentage but passionate with a clear objective.

Think of what happened. A passionate local leader would organize a local militia and then meet with George Washington to offer his services.

When they wrote the 2nd amendment, it was not about guns, it was about the militia!

Haven’t our social media masters banned all mention of the American Revolution since it involved violence?

"It was 3% actually willing to fight. Hence, the “3%ers.”

Correct, and just 3% of 80 million is 2.4 million or a force larger than the entire military of the United States and China combined.

A fact that so far has kept us safe from the ambitions of tyrants both foreign and domestic. Let's hope it keeps working.

3% is 9,750,000 in today’s dollars!

The quartering of enemy soldiers occurs virtually and electronically today. When the Brits kicked doors in, took what they wanted, and taxed crap out of the early Patriots, the smell of gunpowder filled the air and battle lines were drawn.
Today we have invited them in to our lives and homes willingly. The enemy isn’t other Americans, its liberalism, complacency, indifference, silence in the face of opposition, and the acceptance of sin in our lives. The enemy is in each American that goes along with what is wrong, what is evil, and what is unbiblical. Sin is still sin. If we don’t get back to God as individuals, as well as a nation, our hallowed Republic is over and no words will ever save it, only the Word of God. So...

We had an old neighbor who was born in Atlantic Canada, who died at age 90 about forty years ago, and years later my Dad said that his family roots were in New England but they left during the revolution, and he had belonged to the United Empire Loyalists. An organization which I had never previously heard of.

IF the figures that we were told in grad school were accurate (I do NOT KNOW for sure.), the ACTIVE SUPPORTERS of the war against The King of England were about 15% in 1776 AND as the Revolution went on & on the active support for the war lessened.

“I learned 1/3 supported the revolution, 1/3 were loyalists, and 1/3 were indifferent.”

That’s the version I heard as well.

Long ago I read a fairly decent comparison of the AR vs the civil war - the conclusion was that the Confederates stood a better chance than the revolutionaries did.

I’ve heard that said many times. I don’t believe the Congress would have declared independence with that low support. I think the Tories were maybe 10% tops. Very few joined the Tory militias and very few left to Canada after the war.

If your ancestor was an UEL you can put UE after your name for Unity of the Empire...a law passed by the Parliament in Canada for all loyalists and their children and descendants both men and women...I have 5 Loyalist ancestors 2 of them women...they were some of my 4th, 5th and 6th great grandparents...among them the most famous heroine of Canada, Sarah Kast McGinnis...

I have certificates from the UELAC The United Empire Loyalist Association of Canada for all 5 ancestors...

Sgt Stephen (Etienne) Secord, (1757-1808) his father Lt James Secord (1732-1777) interpreter with the Indian Dept, Stephen’s wife was Hannah De Forest (1767-1841) and both her parents were Loyalists, Simon De Forest (1739-1777) and Mary McGinnis De Forest...Sarah Kast McGinnis (1713-1791) was Mary’s mother...

The Secords were from New Rochelle, NY by way of Mehoopany in the Wyoming County, PA on the Susquehanna River and the De Forests were from Albany, NY...

All Americans born to American parents...

and I’m exceedingly proud of them all...

Thank God for Ben Franklin and his abilities with the French. Of Course, Thank God for a lot of others as well.
However, the Brits did come back eventually and they were still pissed.

Cities can be encircled, cut off and starved. The Libs want to do this type of thing on an individualistic, as well as an idealistic basis.

I believe actual active support was 14%. I think i read that in “A Machine That Would Go of Itself”... about 20 years back.

I can’t even remember where my wife is lately. I think she left me. Or she is down stairs. I hope she has the yourkies, because I can’t find them up here.

I wonder how many would have supported the American Revolution if the poorest colonists were the most likely to be obese like they are in 2021 America.

Many of the Tory “supporters” were people whose livelihood was dependent on Tory occupation, so their “support” was not ideological.

Therefore they were uninterested in fighting a war to defend the Tories.

The academic support for the 1/3rd scenario comes from Crain Britton’s Anatomy of a Revolution, which was a study of the French Revolution. He based his conclusions on public accounts, diaries and journals, and the notes from the various revolutionary courts. He then postulated that his findings could and should be applied to most revolutionary movements, particularly ours.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.” - C.S. Lewis
