An assault on an 18-year-old biracial woman in Wisconsin is being investigated as a hate crime after she was set on fire in her car, according to the Madison Police Department.
The victim, Althea Bernstein, told authorities she was stopped at a red light Wednesday with her driver's side window down when she heard someone yell a racial slur. It was at that point that four white men allegedly sprayed a liquid on her face and neck and then threw a flaming lighter at her, which caused the liquid to ignite, according to the incident report.
Scared, Bernstein began to drive and patted out the flames, the report stated. She drove home, where her mother told her to go to the hospital.
At the hospital, she was treated for burns and will need to make follow-up visits for additional medical care, authorities said. Hospital staff, according to police, believe the liquid was lighter fluid.

Another, a black man murdered his 2 White coworkers, doused them with gas and burned them on the side of a busy road while black people videoed it. Needless to say there was no outrage, riots or marches.
Perhaps there is forensic evidence on the lighter thrown into the car, and maybe other evidence from the scene?
I would also like to know more about the alleged victim, including any history of drug use, any history of criminal behavior and any potential history of mental illness. Not saying she has these, just would like to rule them out.
The burns look real, and I hope she recovers fully.
Do the police have have the lighter that was tossed in? Rarely do people use “Zippo” style lighters that stay lit after being “thrown”.

Speaking of which, where is the photograph of the lighter? Just that alone would probably be enough to get a good idea of who did it, often lighters like that get a personality that is identifiable to people familiar with seeing it on a particular person. I mean, they do want to catch who did this right?

Best explanation I’ve heard is she messed up throwing a molotov cocktail. That smug look on her face says ‘ perpetrator’ not victim.
