Phenomenon known as virus interference flagged in DOD study just before COVID-19 burst.
Just a few short weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic burst into public view, a medical researcher published a study on military members who got the flu shot. At the time, it barely created a ripple but its findings are now likely to have a larger impact on the future policy debate over infectious respiratory viruses.
The study published by Dr. Gregory Wolff in Science magazine was entitled, Influenza vaccination and respiratory virus interference among Department of Defense personnel during the 2017-2018 influenza season" and it addressed a suspected phenomenon known as "virus interference."
The question Wolff, who is with the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch Air Force Satellite at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, sought to answer was does the influenza vaccine, i.e. the flu shot, increase the potential for infections from other respiratory viruses. He had the perfect test population: military members who were mostly required to get the annual vaccine.
His findings were mixed: Overall the "receipt of influenza vaccination was not associated with virus interference among the DOD personnel, he wrote. But he added: Examining virus interference by specific respiratory viruses showed mixed results.
And here's the kicker. Vaccine derived virus interference was significantly associated with coronavirus and human metapneumovirus. However, significant protection with vaccination was associated not only with most influenza viruses, but also parainfluenza, RSV, and non-influenza virus co-infections"
In other words, there was some evidence a flu shot recipient might be more vulnerable to a coronavirus although well protected against many other forms of infection.

These folks ought to know but who in their right mind would trust them?

Thank you. There's the answer right there. The answer is, "No", not "d-uhhhhhh, I dunno."
Military personnel who got the flu shot are half as likely to get covid-19 than the general population.
Sheesh. What was so hard about that?
‘SARS vax’ != flu vax.
Totally different pathogens.
Now, let’s compare age demographics.
Troops average age vs. Average age of rest of population.
I’m ready. Give it to me.
I suspect the study is not taking into consideration that the older and also those suffering from major health problems are much more likely to get vaccinated. They are aware of their frailties and are careful to take precautions.
Therefore, since those who are older and have health problems are the largest group to get vaccinated, ....the results of the study would show just that.
If you are old, infirm and suffering life threatening health problems, you are the most likely to die.
Thus another great discovery.
DOD study raises tantalizing question: does flu shot increase vulnerability to coronaviruses?
Hell does the flu shot protect you against the flu?
It has proven to be less than effective because it is not known which variation they are combating.
humm, sounds similar to another result by Dr. Mikovitz, who said that her refusal to back down before fauci and co got her targeted, “tarred” as an anti-vaxer, fired, and finally even imprisoned w/o due process.
it’s enough to make you think about skipping the hit-or-miss influenza vaccine until covid19 mutates itself into oblivion.
You’re the one that implied the one was equal to the other. Ie, troop == general population.
‘Troop’ are more likely to be in the ‘asymptomatic’/uninfected age demographic.
Unless you think DOD is signing up senior citizens and the middle aged?
Not only that, the older get a ‘special vax’ that’s much stronger than the one given to everyone else.
I always found it interesting that my boss, who always got a flu shot, was invariably sick most of the winter with upper respiratory infection after upper respiratory infection.
I never got the flu shot and oddly enough, after i began taking D3 supplements never got any URI’s.
If you want to compare it to the elderly, it would stand to reason the percentage is even lower.
My wife decided a few years back she would indulge her doctor and get a flu shot.
Couldn’t move her arm for over a month. She has not indulged again.
The vast majority of troops are under age 30.
Probably 99.9% under age 50.
Vastly different than the general population.
Even if that is the case, is the difference due to the flu shot, or the fact that military personnel are generally in far better physical condition than the general population?
I don’t think you’re nuts.
Obfuscate much?
The average age for troop will ALWAYS be lower than the average age for the general population.
Troop are only recruited from the 18-35yr olds.
General population is everyone.
They are *also* the healthiest demographic, you aren’t going to recruit cancer patients or the chronically ill.
General population is everyone.
Extrapolation of ‘troop’ health statistics to ‘general population’ health statistics is unwise for those reasons alone.
This suggests a question:
When did the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (and their CO) get flu shots?
This is not a matter of severity, it's a matter of who is infected with it.
If the flu shot made military personnel MORE vulnerable, then MORE military personnel would get infected.
