Should we outlaw SUVs?
Fast Company ^ | October 23, 2019 | Adele Peters

They are an enormous cause of emissions, and deadly to pedestrians? Is it time for automakers to stop selling them or cities to stop allowing them on their streets?

Over the last decade, global SUV ownership has doubled. In that time, the vehicles contributed more to the increase in global CO2 emissions than airlines, trucks, or heavy industry, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency. Even if we add nearly 150 million electric cars to the road by 2040, if SUV ownership grows at its current rate, they’ll offset that entire emissions reduction. And while they’re spewing emissions, they also have a more tangible cost: They’re more likely than smaller cars to kill pedestrians, contributing to a steep rise in pedestrian deaths.

Now some environmental nonprofits argue that automakers shouldn’t be making the vehicles at all, and some politicians are beginning to argue that they should be banned—if not from everywhere, then at least from city streets. In September, when a 3-year-old, his grandmother, and two men in their twenties were killed by an SUV in Berlin (coincidentally, on the same day that the German newspaper Handelsblatt ran a feature article about the growth in SUVs with the headline “SUV insanity“), hundreds of people protested the next day. The next weekend, thousands of people protested at the Frankfurt Auto Show to denounce the climate damage from the SUVs that automakers were promoting at the show ...

Who is the “International Energy Agency”? I have serious questions about the accuracy of their statement that SUVs, alone, generate more CO2 than heavy industry, OTR trucks, or airlines. I suspect that they have defined those categories overly narrowly (or outright falsely), and “SUV” as widely as possible.

Also, a 3yo would be just as badly injured by being struck by a SMART car as by an SUV.

They gave up on agenda 21 and now call it United Nations agenda 2030.

Right .....and who wants to sit uncramped in a big luxurious conveyance.

Personally I’d like to cram myself in a mini or a (ahem) ‘smart’ car(sarc)

I for one can not get in or out of low modern cars without much pain. I bought a Ram in 2014 for just that reason.

Big picture, SUVs pollute less than electric vehicles. Also more likely to keep the occupants safe.
I think the writer is jealous.

The attack on petroleum, Coal, all energy production and refusal to fix our schools and roads is a plan to socialize transportation and get rid of individual travel. They did not make their mandate for 2021 and agenda 21 and now are after 2030. If they were really against CO2 they would be protesting China and India.

The left has one goal with everything they do. Control.
They want to control every human on the planet.

This woman doesn’t know what she’s talking about. The fastest growing segment in the auto industry is not SUV’s.

It is CUV’s. Those vehicles when you boil it down are simply lifted station wagons whose bodies are modified from the traditional wagon look to the SUV look.

Most CUV’s are powered by tiny turbo 4 cylinder engines. Larger size CUV’s are powered by V6’s.

True SUV (truck frame, V8 power) sales such as the Cadillac Escalade, are dwarfed by CUV sales. Hell, pick-up sales are less than CUV sales.

You don't "need" an SUV...

You don't "need" an incandescent light bulb.

You don't "need" a large soda.

You don't "need" a toilet that flushes with a couple gallons of water.

You don't "need" a plastic straw.

You don't "need" a standard capacity magazine.

You don't "need" an AR/AK.

You don't "need" a choice in healthcare.

You don't "need" a border.

You don't "need" a duly elected President.

In short, relax folks, our "betters" will determine what we need or not. Forward, for the party! ... oops, er, sorry. Got carried away, the rally isn't until next week when we're going to lynch a couple of bakers who refused to make cakes...

Sadly, not really satire. That's how the leftists think. That's the "utopia" they want.
