Former Vice President Joe Biden appeared to stumble over his words while discussing the economy and taxes on Tuesday night.

"Why should someone who's clipping coupons in the stock market may, in fact, pay a lower tax rate than someone who in fact is, like I said, a schoolteacher and a fireman? It's ridiculous," Biden said.

Biden made those comments while appearing at the fourth Democratic debate. Biden has long been the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination but is facing a potential challenge Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who has been gaining traction in key states.

"Coupon clipping" was for bonds, not stocks. You would clip off a coupon every half year and mail it in to claim the interest. New issues of bearer bonds were largely eliminated back in the 80s to prevent tax evasion.

But Slow Joe can't figure out the difference between bonds and stocks and brings up stories long out of date. Maybe he can bring up the urgent problem of people breaking their arms crank starting cars.

Clipping coupons. Yes, it was a dated expression like the record player Biden also used. Decorative executive desk sets often silver plated used to come with four items: fountain pen(s) on a mounted pedestal, a pair of very long pointed scissors for clipping, a letter opener in a scabbard and a small index card or scratch paper holder often with one’s initials. None of these items have been in office use since the dial telephone, mimeograph and the Dictaphone.

Poor Biden is stuck in the pre-desktop computer age. Meanwhile President Trump tweets which I’d bet is beyond poor Joe’s capability.

“Clipping coupons” is a legacy term for those whose income (at least in part) derived from payments on bonds, back in the day when the bonds had an actual “coupon” to cut off & send in. IIRC.

So in a sense, Joe isn’t mixing too many metaphors. Neither totally accurate nor inaccurate.

I carry no brief for Quid Pro Joe. Just a bit of lexiconic trivia.

I am probably in a tiny minority here in actually having in my physical possession a bond with paper coupons to clip and redeem.

Of course, it's an old confederate bond. The coupons are clipped right up until April 1865. The owner stopped clipping after that for some reason.

I calculated the accrued interest once. If the South ever rises again, I will be rich.

Maybe I could sell it to Joe, since he understands this stuff.

I had a great uncle who ‘never worked a day in his life’... he played the stock market and ‘clipped coupons’... AND I remember his desk had some of the items you mentioned. Takes me back... I remember him talking about the Crash of ‘29 - said anyone who was paying attention got out before the crash. Like he did. He raised a family - played piano by ear - and lived in a beautiful home. It was a different world...

Biden’s too old for the job.
