Trump Is Right to Warn Democrats About ‘Socialism’
Yahoo Finance ^ | February 7, 2019 | Cass Sunstein

Progressives have embraced the term, and that’s a dangerous mistake.

In his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump was entirely right to reject “new calls to adopt socialism in our country.” He was right to add that “America was founded on liberty and independence — not government coercion,” and to “renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.”

Yet to many Americans, the idea of socialism seems to have growing appeal.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the nation’s most influential new voices, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Senator Bernie Sanders, a leading voice among progressives, has long described himself as a socialist.

So here’s the problem. Many Democrats say that they like socialism. But it is doubtful that they want the government to own and operate the nation’s airlines, hospitals, restaurants and department stores.

In his own effort to explain what he meant by socialism, Sanders did not invoke Karl Marx. Instead he spoke of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

But Roosevelt — the nation’s greatest progressive — was no socialist. Those who now favor large-scale change should avoid a term, and a set of practices, that have so often endangered both liberty and prosperity.

But Roosevelt — the nation’s greatest progressive — was no socialist.

Bullshit.

While Roosevelt didn't acquire industry, he mandated its operations to the point of acquisition, making the distinction between regulation and outright socialism meaningless.

Exactly right.

And you can say the same thing about today's "progressives". They don't want to acquire industry. They too mandate their operations.

And they just don't want to be called socialists, which is their only complaint about AOC.

it’s interesting that a whole slew of leftist media shills, including yahoo, bloomberg and CNBC are suddenly attacking socialism. My guess is that the dying lying leftist fake stream enemedia is desperately trying to warn the Dem primary clown car crowd that overtly promoting socialism as a major Dem position is a total non-starter ...

“Trump is baiting the Democrats on the socialism issue. They will be desperately trying to prove him wrong and in the process will push their crazy utopian ideas harder than ever, which of course will backfire on them. Once again, a brilliant strategy by Trump. He sure knows how to manipulate his adversaries.”

indeed. reverse psychology works even better on Democrats than it does on cats and kindergartners ...

“He’s warning Democrats not to use the word “Socialism” because it fires up the rubes.”

not just Cass, but a whole slew of other leftist media shills are also currently attacking socialism ... they know it’s a total non-starter in 2020 and are trying to signal a warning to the Dems ...

“influential” ?? Where do they get this crap?

She absolutely is. Kamala Harris and Pocahontas Warren just jumped on board with her "Green New Deal" disaster. That's influence.

AOC is one of the most powerful politicians in the country right now and she's been in office little over a single month.

She has 2.86 million Twitter followers, and more each day. More than Nancy Pelosi. She's getting her voice heard.

“But FDR was firmly committed to private property and to free markets. He spoke of economic planning, and he even did a little — but he never embraced socialist-style planning.”

Actually, Mr. Sunstein, he DID embrace it. It was called the National Recovery Act and it did a LOT of what you say he didn’t do, as anyone who bothered reading The Forgotten Man by Amity Schlaes would know. That pernicious Act controlled prices and markets until it was found unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the Schlechter Brothers case. Your sentiment is fine, but your facts are really off. By the way, for all the Social Democrats out there . . . Sweden has a PERSONAL ACCOUNT in their Social Security system, no Estate/Death Tax, no Property Taxes and School Choice in their education system, yet ALL of those are Republican platform items that you find ‘risky, intolerable, racist, etc’!

There’s a method to the madness, and it’s sick and twisted.

WORDS FOR THE AGES:

"America was founded on liberty and independence - not government coercion, domination, and control.
We are born free, and we will stay free. America will never be a socialist country.” (Pres Donald Trump)
