Progressives have embraced the term, and that’s a dangerous mistake.
In his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump was entirely right to reject “new calls to adopt socialism in our country.” He was right to add that “America was founded on liberty and independence — not government coercion,” and to “renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.”
Yet to many Americans, the idea of socialism seems to have growing appeal.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the nation’s most influential new voices, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Senator Bernie Sanders, a leading voice among progressives, has long described himself as a socialist.
So here’s the problem. Many Democrats say that they like socialism. But it is doubtful that they want the government to own and operate the nation’s airlines, hospitals, restaurants and department stores.
In his own effort to explain what he meant by socialism, Sanders did not invoke Karl Marx. Instead he spoke of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
But Roosevelt — the nation’s greatest progressive — was no socialist. Those who now favor large-scale change should avoid a term, and a set of practices, that have so often endangered both liberty and prosperity.

Be very wary of Cass Sunstein. My recollection of him under Obama was that he was a lefty’s leftist. Sounds like he’s trying to play “good cop” now.

Trump is baiting the Democrats on the socialism issue. They will be desperately trying to prove him wrong and in the process will push their crazy utopian ideas harder than ever, which of course will backfire on them. Once again, a brilliant strategy by Trunmp. He sure knows how to manipulate his adversaries.
He’s warning Democrats not to use the word “Socialism” because it fires up the rubes. I doubt he has any problem with the platform, other than preferring a more gradual phase-in than the AOC types are willing to wait for.
“Leftie’s Leftist” is a good description...He thinks it’s the government’s job (thru technocrats and “scientists” like himself, of course) to “nudge” people the way we should go...

That is what I remember.
Pure damage control by Sunstein. Trying to change the language used. He is 100% all in for socialism. But like with post birth abortion, he knows honestly about intent is not a viable option when it comes to socialism. Thus, time to change the language again.

Wasn’t this supposed to be a serious news article? Strange that the author would offer humor in an article like this.
The problem with socialism is that everyone who is for it thinks that they will be the one in charge.
Funny how no one mentions Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot or the many other socialists who murdered upwards of 100 million civilians. But somehow they all know about Hitler, who killed fewer than either Stalin or Mao.
Circle logic in the article. Socialism or anything our Leftists want to call it, still means Command and control economy.
