Hellmeier said, according to the probable cause statement, that "he advised that he told the defendant and victim that they shouldn't be playing with guns and that they were police officers. He felt uncomfortable with them playing with guns and didn't want to have any part of it and he started to leave. As he left the room but before leaving the apartment he heard a shot. He went back into the room and saw that the victim had been shot in the chest." Anyone else thinks this explanation sounds a bit off. Three people involved. The victim, off duty cop Katlyn Alix, 24, and two cops on duty Nathaniel Hendren, 29, the shooter, and Sgt. Richard Hellmeier, Hendren's partner.
So we are to believe the two cops decided to play a game of Russian roulette and the sergeant advised against it but allegedly was going to just walk out of the apartment while they played their "game"? Any why were the two on duty cops at Alix's apartment in the first place?

Agreed. I was waiting for the journalist to say the officers had only one cartridge in the magazine when, wait, I mean bullet in the clip when the Russian Roulette shooting happened.

They were pointing the gun at each other and pulling the trigger.

Also, dont play it with a semi-auto. Just saying.

The article said it was a revolver with one round loaded. Not likely to have been a duty weapon.

But what did you expect the Sergeant to do?
They were not on duty.
He had no official control over them.
He told them to stop.
When they did not take his advice, he said he wanted no part of the foolishness.
What should he have done?
It made no sense for him to pull a gun on them or to shoot them.

Sadly, other than the deceased officer, they WERE on duty. This makes it even exponentially more stupid, if that is possible.

The St. Louis Police Department had said Thursday following the shooting that Alix had been shot in an "accidental discharge" when Hendren "mishandled a firearm."When you point a knowingly loaded gun at someone and pull the trigger, most of the time they function exactly as they were designed to do.

Each pull of the trigger increased the odds.
SGT should have tackled, wrestled the gun from his or her hands.
Should have pulled his weapon and ordered them to stop.
Radio for backup.
Shot at the ceiling. Someone was going to die , so better to shoot them in the leg maybe?

Pretty sure suicide actually is a crime because if you damage some one else or their property in the act, even though you are no longer physically present to prosecute, those harmed or damaged by your action can seek redress in the courts. IOW if the rifle round you fire through your head goes on to kill a 7 year old in the next house your estate can and will be sued.

I have NEVER heard of a woman playing Russian roulette. Never. This story sounds as likely as those ‘fan deaths” that newly-immigrated Korean men sometimes report when their wives are found asphyxiated.
