The medical community is far too unconditionally affirmative in its treatment of rapid onset gender dysphoria (ROGD), a Wall Street Journal op-ed argued Sunday, making ROGD an anomaly among social contagions.
Unlike traditional gender dysphoria, a “psychological affliction that begins in early childhood and is characterized by a severe and persistent feeling that one was born the wrong sex,” writes Abigail Shrier, ROGD is “a social contagion that comes on suddenly in adolescence, afflicting teens who’d never exhibited any confusion about their sex.”
Unlike other social contagions, such as cutting and bulimia, ROGD gets “full support from the medical community” instead of the treatment such contagions deserve, she contends.
“The standard for dealing with teens who assert they are transgender is ‘affirmative care’—immediately granting the patient’s stated identity,” Ms. Shrier writes, when the role of therapists should be to assist their patients in overcoming their unhealthy urges rather than pandering to them.
Gender dysphoria has now become “a fashionable cause,” and clinics routinely give girls testosterone with few questions asked, and with little thought to the sometimes permanent damage that such treatment brings about.
“Planned Parenthood furnishes testosterone to young women on an ‘informed consent’ basis, without requiring any psychological evaluation,” Shrier notes. “Student health plans at 86 colleges—including those of nearly every Ivy League school—cover not only cross-sex hormones but surgery as well.”
Parents who question the wisdom of yielding to their children’s desire to change genders often run up against a wall of contrary public opinion with very little scientific evidence to back it up.
“Nearly every force in society is aligned against these parents,” Shrier says. “Churches scramble to rewrite their liturgies for greater ‘inclusiveness.’ Therapists and psychiatrists undermine parental authority with immediate affirmation of teens’ self-diagnoses.

The original article in the WSJ was excellent. One thing that the author mentioned struck me: these girls are almost all from “Politically progressive” families. Their mothers were big supporters of same-sex marriage, were happy when their daughters announced they were lesbians, but are seriously unnerved by their daughters’ latest move, if only for the physical and mental health aspects of it. Yet they’re too afraid of their daughters and progressive society to even breathe a hint of their opposition to “transgenderism” and their fears.
They created the breeding ground for this tyrannical “Social contagion” and now they don’t know what to do.
Between this and millenialitis the country is doomed
Cui Bono? Obviously psychiatrists, surgeons, feminists who believe there is no difference between the sexes, LGBT . . .who claim sexual preferences are hardwired, pedophiles, humanists, etc.
Political correctness is the reason. PC is when people reject reason for political gain.
There is at least one other PC disease: aids. It is treated way differently than normal diseases.

Political correctness runs amuck this guy can’t come out and say this gender stuff is destructive. He’s gotta throw a bunch of medical terms in effect mumble against it. When WSJ’s Dr Williams writes a prescription sounds like the pharmacy has to call him and ask what he’s asking for.

This is a direct result of the Human Rights Tribunals that every state government has. These kangaroo courts are packed with bizarre leftist who will sue anyone into poverty.
We live in terrible times with horrors coming if these sorts of institutions are not eliminated.

I don’t think the medical community in general accepts this anymore than many obstetricians support abortion
But I do think there are more doctors to help these nuts self mutilate than before

Oh, it happens everywhere, potentially in any family, because it is indeed a “social contagion.” It probably is more common among the lefties, but the interesting thing to me is that even they are afraid to oppose it or even express any reservations.

Why is the left so fascinated with this mental disease and why do they enable it so wholeheartedly.
It’s like they see these confused and mentally damaged gender dysphoric people and see a kindred spirit since they, themselves, are so mentally damaged in other ways.
It’s truly sick and disgusting. Instead of trying to find a way to help these mentally ill gender dysphoric people they are encouraging it. In a just society they would be taken out back, shot, and dumped in the ditch for the wildlife to feed on.
