Residents of China's southern city of Yulin defended eating dog meat to celebrate the summer solstice on Thursday, as animal rights activists seek new ways to pressure organizers to cancel the annual festival.

The ten-day event, dubbed the lychee and dog meat festival by residents, has become a lightning rod for dog lovers, who every year confront those who buy, sell and eat canines.

In recent years, animal rights activists have raided slaughterhouses and intercepted truckloads of dogs in efforts to limit the number of animals killed.

And they don’t just eat dogs - they kill them in the most terrible ways. The dogs are not slaughtered, as a proper butchering procedure, they are tortured to death.

Every time you think China has come into the modern age, this sort of thing comes along.

Hmmm. The Japanese kill fish with a single blow to the head with a type of pointed hatchet, all but sever the tail to drain the blood, and run a wire up the spine to prevent any "stress" signals from reaching glands that might "taint" the flesh.

Being boiled alive, seems to me, would have the brain sending endocrine glands into overdrive.
