Identity politics has engulfed the humanities and social sciences on American campuses; now it is taking over the hard sciences. The STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and math—are under attack for being insufficiently “diverse.” The pressure to increase the representation of females, blacks, and Hispanics comes from the federal government, university administrators, and scientific societies themselves. That pressure is changing how science is taught and how scientific qualifications are evaluated. The results will be disastrous for scientific innovation and for American competitiveness.
A scientist at UCLA reports: “All across the country the big question now in STEM is: how can we promote more women and minorities by ‘changing’ (i.e., lowering) the requirements we had previously set for graduate level study?” Mathematical problem-solving is being deemphasized in favor of more qualitative group projects; the pace of undergraduate physics education is being slowed down so that no one gets left behind.
The National Science Foundation (NSF), a federal agency that funds university research, is consumed by diversity ideology. Progress in science, it argues, requires a “diverse STEM workforce.” Programs to boost diversity in STEM pour forth from its coffers in wild abundance. The NSF jump-started the implicit-bias industry in the 1990s by underwriting the development of the implicit association test (IAT). (The IAT purports to reveal a subject’s unconscious biases by measuring the speed with which he associates minority faces with positive or negative words; see “Are We All Unconscious Racists?,” Autumn 2017.) Since then, the NSF has continued to dump millions of dollars into implicit-bias activism. In July 2017, it awarded $1 million to the University of New Hampshire and two other institutions to develop a “bias-awareness intervention tool.”

My son got his ChemE from Purdue in 2015. Of the 115 students getting that degree, there were maybe 15 females and about 20 Asians (all the Asians were in Electrical and Computer Engineering). There were NO blacks. None. There were a handful getting their M.E’s and C.E’s. From the spelling of their names many of them were not African Americans but African Africans.
Purdue President Mitch Daniels has been pitching minorities in the Engineering Schools. However, as my son points out, the fluid in the pipe doesn’t care if you are black, gay, female or whatever. If the controls of pressure, temperature and flow aren’t set right, the plant blows up and people die. It’s not being racist, sexist or homophobic. It is doing what its going to do.

I think Lee25 was close but wrong.
You can have a functioning civilization OR have black culture.
If you take a random group of blacks in this country from all across the class spectrum I think you will find that the blacks IQ lags the whites. BUT if you take a group of random blacks from majority black culture groups you will see that their IQ lags by a huge amount. AND if you take a random group of blacks who are integrated into normal American culture, I expect you’ll find no lag at all (They are just us with good tans)
At least that has been my experience. It seems that the more they are in black culture the slower they are.
I do not know if the effect is reversible or if it requires a whole new generation raised in normal culture to see the difference.
(A good friend of mine was raised in Watts and then in the ghetto of Milwaukee. But his mother (God bless her) insisted that her boys assimilate into white culture (Study hard, speak correct English, don’t do drugs etc). Both her sons are very smart successful people. SO even being raised in the hood is not a doom as long as the culture in the home is American)
(I’ve never had the deep enough interest to see if such a study has been done. I know that IQ tests have shown blacks being behind whites but I don’t know if the culture has ever been factored into that)
Unfortunately peer pressure is a powerful thing in the American black community. It is a cultural hurdle to overcome, and one put in place by the welfare nanny state. Need I reference LBJ’s infamous statement?
I have worked with engineers from Africa and the Caribbean. Most want nothing to do with the victim culture.
What is the attrition rate at Purdue for the chemical engineering program? At New Jersey Institute of Technology (the former Newark College of Engineering), 200 freshman would start, 25 seniors would graduate. This was back in the 70’s. The weeding out points were Physical Chemistry (P-Chem), and Organic Chemistry.

I would imagine that Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, and Clarence Thomas would not want much to do with the victim culture either.
People who are culturally-middle-class, with the associated values which result in success, have more in common with each other than with members of the underclass who happen to share their skin color.
My son told me the two semesters of Organic Chem in sophomore year were the weed out points. One of his Organic Chem profs was a Nobel Prize Laureate. I’m not sure what the attrition rate was but my son said getting his degree was “grueling.” Purdue Chem E’s do all the math that aereospace does, plus the Chemistry. He has a T-shirt that says: “Purdue School of Chemical Engineering: Where Your Best Hasn’t Been Good Enough Since 1915.”
The amount of melanin one's skin happens to have has nothing to do with one's intelligence, despite what Darwin, Huxley and Sanger opined. People with slanted eyelids are not more intelligent than anyone else because their eyes happen to be slanted. Intelligence and superficial phenotypic characteristics have nothing to do with intelligence.
Some of the stupidest people in the world I have known happen to have been phenotypically "white." Speaking as one who has achieved multiple degrees in natural sciences, undergrad and grad, some of the most intelligent people I have known, gone to school with, and had the pleasure of working with have had skin color darker than mine and eyes more slanted than mine.
These people were smart, for the simple reason that they were gifted, worked hard, studied hard, and applied themselves - even as many phenotypically "white" people I know have done.
Attributing skin color to having anything to do with a person's intelligence elevates coincidentality and broad generalizations to the level of "science" when it is more often merely the expression of personal bigotries as manifested by careless simpletons.

You are entirely correct. There are no statistically significant differences between ethnic groups due to genetics. Any disparity in achievement between ethnic groups is entirely due to racism, and needs to be remediated through the legal system. I thereby bow out of this discussion.
You, Lee25, and John O have carelessly conflated the meaning of one's biologically determined "skin color" with that of "ethnic groups," just like every Democrat liberal out there does.
That is why your collective perspectives on this matter are so impoverished. You have allowed your lexicon to be defined just the way liberals want you to define it -- and you'll lose the argument on this topic every time when you do that.
Lazy thinkers paint with broad strokes because its the easy thing to do. Government enshrines its public policy based upon lazy thinking, and damages people they have grouped together in the process.
I notice no one except perhaps Lee25 himself wants to step to the plate and defend Lee25's first stupid comment that spawned this discussion.

Go back and read it again. I said nothing about ANY racial characteristic of anyone. It’s all about culture.
The bottom line is that black culture in these United States is designed to make blacks fail regardless of their natural abilities. Black culture in most of the rest of the world works exactly the same.
Get these people “acting white” and their test scores and personal success will eventually also conform to the white experience.
"White experience," you say.
If you are going to continue to paint carelessly with your broad brush strokes you can't leave out any examples of your broadly brushed groups.
