Self-driving vehicles.... dangerous?
freerepublic.com ^ | 03/20/2018 | self

Now that an Arizona woman was killed after being struck by a self-driving Uber vehicle many questions come to mind not that they shouldn’t.

We live in Pittsburgh, lots of hills, and lots of snow and ice.

There are times when we have difficulty controlling a car in those conditions (our weather forecast is for 6 inches of snow later today and tonight).

A couple months ago my wife, after driving to and from work in terrible road conditions, wondered how a self-driving car would handle it. What do you think of these self-driving cars navigating snow and ice?

Maybe self driving cars might work on cross country trips with designated lanes on freeways, but in cities, traffic and in bad weather conditions I wouldn’t trust them

RE:”I’ve driven enough mountain roads to know that black ice is an unseen. Yes tapping is an indicator. But as I said only if you are solo on the road”

There can be others on the road but its a bad idea to tailgate them if you expect ice.

And driving up and down curved mountain roads in ice is looking for trouble too.

I typically try to pass cars that are going too slow for me so they are not in front of me.

could a computer really do a worse job than the vast majority of the people you see around you? no, I thought not. the faster we are 100% driverless, the better off we will all be; I just hope it happens before we reach full “idiocracy” levels.

An incredibly naive, if not completely ignorant point of view.

Moreover, cars are freedom. No way in HELL am I going to give over control of my vehicle to some government-controlled computer. You blue-staters can keep your self-driving cars.

That is a great idea. There should be established national testbed municipalities for driverless cars .... in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland OR, Wellesley MA..... Actually, anywhere that has declared itself a “sanctuary city” (or state) would be perfect.

__________

LOL...... or in Chappaqua, N.Y.

I suspect that the “self-driving vehicle” will say “I’m not going out in this,” which is what the idiots we see on the news sliding into each other on the icy roadways.

-------

Hypothetical scenario: I drive to work and while there it snows - what are my options now? Drive home? Stay at work? Go to local hotel? Seriously.

In good weather, you see the idiot drivers passing you doing 85mph, and in winter, it's the same idiots you see doing 360s, causing accidents and ending up in snow banks off the road.

-------

One thing I have noticed is that folks with 4 wheel drive do not realize they DO NOT have 4 wheel stop.

Think about it: The reason humans have to slow down to 15 MPH in traffic is because we don’t have the reaction time to break when our cars have to be packed so closely together, and it also takes a certain distance to break.

I try to avoid big city metro areas during rush hour, but get stuck in it every once in a while. I came to the conclusion most of the backups are at major interchanges. People find themselves in the wrong lane to exit and stop traffic to get in the exit lane. I've even seen a few jerks go from the far left lane to exit. Another problem is the side streets can't handle the off ramp traffic flow during rush hour and traffic backups on to the expressway. Personally I think it only a few people that screw it up for the rest of us. There is not much you can do about construction or accidents.

They will create a separate lane for these self drives..

Will that lane be on the left near where the deer first cross in front of your car?

ALSO ....where is that "separate lane" on a two lane back road?
