McCain takes veiled shots at Trump over draft dodging

Sen. John McCain took some veiled shots at President Trump over the weekend — slamming high income draft dodgers like himself for using their wealth to avoid serving in the Vietnam War.

“One aspect of the conflict, by the way, that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest income level of America and the highest income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur,” the Arizona lawmaker told C-SPAN3 in an interview that aired Sunday.

“That is wrong. That is wrong,” he said. “If we’re going to ask every American to serve, every American should serve.”

McCain, a Republican, didn’t actually name Trump — but the “bone spur” reference appeared to be a direct jab.

The president received several draft deferments during the war, including one in 1968 for bone spurs in his heels.

McCain’s comments come as tensions between him and the commander-in-chief continue to escalate.

The Vietnam war hero has spent the past week criticizing the president and his own party. He blasted “half-baked, spurious nationalism” in a speech last Monday, sparking a brief war of words between the two.

Did he go after Romney, Quayle, Dubya, Billy Jeff, Obama and Jeff Flake?

Too bad he didn’t prove the “fight back” part of that sentence during his campaign performance vs. Obama.

I move to third that!

Strange that the jackass McCain has never bitched about Chris Rock, who after all originated that POW joke Trump used to refer to McCain. Also strange that McCain had hosted SNL, the very show where that joke was first broadcast.

The punk went to the Naval academy and knows zip about the real facts regarding who was drafted. It was not the poor whites and the blacks who served disproportionally in Vietnam. In fact, it was many whites with some college plus over 3/4’s of my Infantry OCS class 2-67 were college grads. Every man of age (19-22 ) knew if his fanny was not in college or he was not married that he would get drafted. Nothing about wealth. I had a neighbor here who was a chevy mechanic and he admitted he DR shopped to get 4F. He was not rich.

They’re both pals of the newest idiot loudmouth and draft dodger, GW Bush, who kept out of Vietnam by the good graces of his old man and his influence. Mission Accomplished.

“Too bad he didn’t prove the “fight back” part of that sentence during his campaign performance vs. Obama.”

Yeah, that would have been nice. I joined the army in 1965 and was in Vietnam 65 ~ 66. After being discharged in 1968 decided to go to college in 1969 and graduated with a BA in Economics in 1973. Anyway, got to observe first hand how the draft worked. And, there were a multitude of ways to beat it. Here’s some that come to mind; college deferment had to carry minimum of twelve hours and maintain a C Average, join a reserve or guard unit. These units in those days were nothing like today’s which are deployed and fight regularity in Irag, Afganistan, etc. become a teacher, cop, fireman, employed by a defense contractor, be a congressional aide. During the early days being married would get a deferment but that was eliminated sometime along the way, imagine that, lol! Anyway, it boiled down to those who didn’t have any political connections, money, or parents that did found themselves drafted. So, Trump had lots of company for sure.

McCain ran in 2008 to help get a Democrat elected. There is no way his campaign can be that inept. I never seen a candidate endorse his own opponent during a campaign stop. Other than Perot, I never seen a candidate put their campaign on hold.

Trump said in a radio interview with WMAL in Washington, “I’m being very, very nice but at some point I fight back and it won’t be pretty.”

What could Trump possibly do to McCain?
