Editorial: California burns: Where’s the president?
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | October 15, 2017 | Chronicle Editorial Board

Posted on 10/15/2017 6:31:22 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

As raging wildfires devour the lives, homes and dreams of Californians in an unprecedented scale, one voice has been conspicuously mute through day after day of crisis: President Trump.

This is not a man who is reticent to let Americans know what is foremost on his mind. He is also someone who should have learned by now — after devastating hurricanes and the Las Vegas massacre — that Americans expect their president to step forward with empathy and resolve in moments of national trauma.

Yet Trump has offered no more than a few perfunctory words about the Wine Country fires that have left at least 40 dead, consumed thousands of structures and stretched the physical and mental mettle of the dedicated firefighters and medical professionals to the edge of exhaustion.

So how can it be that the loss of 40 human beings on American soil did not merit a single tweet? The most forgiving interpretation would be that Trump, along with the cable networks that seem to attract his laser focus and have not made this a huge story, have a case of disaster fatigue. Perhaps the problem is that he hasn’t been blasted for his underwhelming response: There is no surer way to provoke him to his phone. The most cynical speculation would be that he could not care less about a state that despises him like no other.

Devastated California awaits your leadership, Mr. President. Tweet up, if you care.

California is probably LESS deserving of aid than Puerto Rico. There is enough potential wealth right in California, they could rebound with virtually no help from the Federal government, but the doctrinaire liberals that have locked up so much of California’s potential, by overregulation and poor regard for obligations, compounded by planning things like a “bullet train to nowhere” and excessive attention given to snail darters (an invasive species, by the way), they have become complete wastrels and sometimes, totally unhinged about things they cannot change.

Put your money where your mouth is, California. The Federal government shall EVENTUALLY come to your aid, but because of potential lawsuits, will necessarily slow-walk the assistance. Nobody knows what is going to trigger some snowflakes on the coastal enclaves and send them marching against every symbol of the current Administration.

Any excuse to lambast the President.

No matter what he does, to them, it is wrong.

They should stop urinating on the president and aim it toward the fires.

They wanted no part of the USA, in fact they want to secede. They hate Trump. It’s sad so many patriotic Americans are prisoners to the socialist/commie/libs that run the state.

The president spoke on the phone with Gov. Brown last week, and early on during this unfolding nightmare the president declared California a disaster area.

The president didn’t create Mexifornia’s lack of adequate fire breaks and refusal to keep underbrush cleared. Nobody in other states did either.

Mexifornia, vnfvck yourselves.

Maybe Jerry should have thought of the Federal government before he declared CA a sanctuary state. Actions have consequences. (Although I believe the Feds will do everything possible.)

I was thinking we should develop aircraft to spray cold cryogenic liquid on a fire. Smother the fire and freeze the area. But chances are this isn’t possible or practical to make a plane flying hundreds of miles per hour to spray liquid nitrogen, liquid helium, or the other cold non oxygen gases in a cold liquid state.

When they asked ‘Where’s the President?’ I thought they were going to ask why he hasn’t arrested California’s Governor, Attorney General, and some mayors, for sedition.

Decades of poor forest and water management, incompetent liberal leadership and now all of a sudden it's Trumps fault?

What a crock.

Author = “Chronicle Editorial Board”? Is that to shelter the actual writer from being singled out for a retort?

I think there is only one rationale for this piece — so when Trump makes a major overture concerning the fires and their aftermath, they can say (as they always do): “He doesn’t really mean it; anyway, TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE!”

5 days ago he expressed thoughts and prayers about the fires, and said to the people of California, “We will always be here for you in your time of need.”
