No. Owners are free to charge what they want. Owner A can charge $1200 for a 1200 square foot apartment and Owner B can charge $1500 for a 1200 square foot apartment.
But an apartment owner (Owner A) can’t rent an identical apartment to Joe and charge Bill 2 times as much, without some kind of cost justification. They have to have a set price for 1200 square foot apartments.
Now they can vary it if one has a better view or has been remodeled more recently. That’s a justified difference.
They could even vary it based on the credit worthiness of the two applicants. They can up their price one day for everybody and lower it the next for everybody.
But without a difference, they can’t quote a different price to the two individuals, or they are subject to having violated anti-trust laws.
Can’t say that I disagree with Karl here. Although he’s got too much bitter butt-hurt going on as far as I’m concerned.
I do hope he’s wrong though. I do hope this repackaged ObamaCare lite will work.
More liberals like this top union thug don’t like this bill!
AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders on the American Health Care Act

WASHINGTON
AFSCME Pres. Lee Saunders issued the following statement on the passage of the American Health Care Act through the U.S. House of Representatives:
The political fig leaves that were added behind closed doors to garner votes do nothing to change the facts of this bill. It will still leave at least 24 million Americans uninsured, still cut Medicaid in exchange for tax handouts for corporations and millionaires, still cause costs to skyrocket for older Americans and still eviscerate the protections for people with pre-existing conditions that are guaranteed under the Affordable Care Act.
Patient groups, healthcare providers, and voters in blue states, red states, and purple states alike have already spoken out repeatedly against this cruel and dangerous legislation. But the House of Representatives and the Trump administration chose to ignore their pleas. It now falls to the U.S. Senate to finally listen to the American people and stop this bill in its tracks.

2017 United States federal budget
So the recently passed spending bill unavoidably contains the remaining momentum of the lawless Obama Administration.
In other words, the bill honors unconstitutional spending promises made for that period.
And speaking of the federal fiscal year, patriots need to support Trump in doing the following suggestion from previously posted material.
Patriots need to support Trump in working with the states to amend the Constitution as follows where the first day of the federal fiscal year and tax day are concerned.
The states need to ratify an amendment to the Constitution which not only requires the start of a new federal fiscal year to be the last work day before federal election day, but also include in that amendment a provision to move tax day from April 15 to that same work day before election day.
And lets not overlook a provision in the amendment to make the first day of the new federal fiscal year, that day also tax day before election day, a national holiday.
Drain the swamp! Drain the swamp!
Remember in November 18 !
Since Trump entered the 16 presidential race too late for patriots to make sure that there were state sovereignty-respecting candidates on the primary ballots, patriots need make sure that such candidates are on the 18 primary ballots so that they can be elected to support Trump in draining the unconstitutionally big federal government swamp.
Such a Congress will also be able to finish draining the swamp with respect to getting the remaining state sovereignty-ignoring, activist Supreme Court justices off of the bench.
In fact, if Justice Gorsuch turns out to be a liberal Trojan Horse then we will need 67 patriot senators to remove a House-impeached Gorsuch from office.
Noting that the primaries start in Iowa and New Hampshire in February 18, patriots need to challenge candidates for federal office in the following way.
While I Googled the primary information above concerning Iowa and New Hampshire, FReeper iowamark brought to my attention that the February primaries for these states apply only to presidential election years. And after doing some more scratching, since primary dates for most states for 2018 elections probably havent been uploaded at this time (March 14, 2017), FReepers will need to find out primary dates from sources and / or websites in their own states.
Patriots need to qualify candidates by asking them why the Founding States made the Constitutions Section 8 of Article I; to limit (cripple) the federal governments powers.
Patriots also need to find candidates that are knowledgeable of the Supreme Court's clarifications of the federal governments limited powers listed below.
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress [emphasis added]. Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
From the accepted doctrine that the United States is a government of delegated powers, it follows that those not expressly granted, or reasonably to be implied from such as are conferred, are reserved to the states, or to the people. To forestall any suggestion to the contrary, the Tenth Amendment was adopted. The same proposition, otherwise stated, is that powers not granted are prohibited [emphasis added]. United States v. Butler, 1936.
“Its been the law of the land since the great depression.”
Then why do you say we need new laws?
That is one of the best parts of this new bill to not give congress critters and other govt. officials a premium healthcare package while the rest of us get the crumbs.
Other than an emergency room visit where you don’t know what care you need in advance, there’s nothing that stops you from negotiating a price for a medical procedure directly with a doctor.
No it’s not the same, apartments and medical care. Not all medical care can be commodity priced but a lot of it can. Why should 500 mg of Tylenol cost 20 cents for one patient and $8 for another. Why is a chest x-ray $22 for one person and $400 another. People criticizing this article think this is an attack on Trump or just more never-Trumpism but it’s not. It’s simply a recognition that repealing Obamacare even if it were a complete and clean repeal (which we all know this isn’t) would not lower healthcare costs.
Obamacare is wrong and bad because it forces people to do things against their will. The problem with American healthcare is that it costs too much and nothing is being done by either party to address that. Which means in the end we will end up with really crappy single payer healthcare because even many Republicans will be unable to pay for healthcare or insurance and will just give in.
There are number of good ideas, price transparency being just one, that could genuinely reduce healthcare costs across the board but they are not being legislated for the simple reason that the GOP is as much bought and sold by special interests as the left is. Even healthcare companies that would could thrive in a more free market medical economy don’t want to change because change is hard.
I think today’s vote is a big victory for Trump because he did something he said he would do that his voters wanted him to do. I worry though when he says in his press conference that premiums will now go down and cost will go down because he is setting himself up for the same beating Obama got when he said Obamacare would do those things. Allow me to make an amazing Freeper prediction. Premiums will go up next year. Healthcare costs will go up next year. Anyone who would like to take that bet please let me know because I could use the extra money to help pay my premiums.
Wouldn't the passage of Obamacare have created a slew of people whose conditions developed during the 20 or 30 years they were covered by the same insurer? And then under Ocare, they (or their employers) had to scramble for a new insurer and -- presto! -- "pre-existing condition"?
Have you tried that for anything major that your GP or doc in a box can’t fix? You’ll get crickets 90% of the time and the other 10% of the time will take you all day to get one.
Have you ever seen a welfare program rolled back? Me neither.
“Pricing transparency is one of, if not the, the key reasons why capitalism works.”
You are so right. Nobody buys any other product unless they have a firm quote, or at least a fairly tight range.
In addition, charging me $20,000 for bypass surgery and charging an insurance company $6,000 for the same surgery forces me to buy insurance from the insurance company. It is the same as purchasing protection from the mafia.
Corporations want single payer.
That reduces their bottom line, and makes salary negotiations that much easier. At my old job, the plant manager would sent little news letters stating how it would be good for company bottom line to have single payer healthcare.
And with the promised tax cut to corporate taxes, that is even better.
Yeah, he’s kind of pathetic.
But he also happens to be correct in this circumstance.
What it really means is that one party is not good at negotiations.
Lets be honest. We have had a socialist style medical system for decades now. We are now just arguing about who pays.
No, I’m afraid not. it’s only marginally better than the first version of AHCA, which was only marginally better than 0bamacare itself.
I was a little concerned about this but so many are whining that apparently it is a pretty good realistic bill.
Do you SERIOUSLY believe that there are steps 2 and 3? SERIOUSLY?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!
I get your point but you’re comparing apples and oranges. The car or house repair will be done by one person or company and probably a small one at that.
The hip repair will be done by a hospital, a clinic, a doctor, an OR team, rehab specialists, post survey people, and hardware makers, just to name the ones I can think of. Each one of those entities will have a different pricing structure and won’t know the cost until after the procedure is done and the patient is fully recovered. Then there’s the possibility of flying first class or economy so to speak. Just like when one flies and has a choice of that $5k seat in first class or that $700 seat in economy; hospitals have that ability too.
The best anyone can hope for is a price that was eventually paid by someone in the past who had gone through a similar operation which will have many different variables but might at least give a ball park figure of what to expect but don’t be surprised if the price is completely different due to complications or (hopefully) lack of complications or longer rehab needed. Etc. Etc.
That’s why you can’t get a price quote for your hip repair like you can for your doorstep repair.
