This IHOP Waiter Helps A Woman With A Disability Eat Breakfast And People Are Beyond Touched

Joe Thomas has had the same Saturday breakfast routine for about the last five years.

After checking on his customers at an IHOP in Springfield, Illinois, the 43-year-old server slides next to an elderly couple he calls Dale and Ma and helps them eat breakfast. Ma has Huntington's disease, a genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, Thomas said, and has trouble with utensils.

Dale used to feed his wife before eating, letting his own breakfast — two eggs, sausages, and pancakes with butter and a single egg on top — go cold.

"One day I just said to him you eat your food — I got this," said Thomas, adding that he's watched Ma's health deteriorate for almost seven years. "I remember when she was able to walk and feed herself more than she can now."

Ma has been ordering the same breakfast for the last few years: a bowl of fruit, applesauce, and two eggs over medium, which Thomas helps cut.

"We've become good friends and I've grown attached to her. I'm just here to help," he added.

“I don’t understand that. The wife has to chew, doesn’t she? In the time in which she’s chewing, why can’t he take a bite of his own food? Then while he’s chewing, he can give her the next bite.”

And then perhaps he could squeeze a few knee bends in./s

People with Huntington’s have tremors and difficulty
swallowing.

Sorry, but I have no intention of giving up thinking any time soon. If disability forces me to, though, perhaps an IHOP employee will step in and do my thinking for me. (Can’t count on a family member.)

That IHOP employee may be a good guy, but feeding someone a whole meal goes beyond just doing a favor. As either the husband or wife, I’d be embarrassed by that kind of conspicuous do-gooding. Feeding her is something the husband should be doing, and I don’t see why he couldn’t do so without his food getting cold.

If what I described previously slowed them down enough that food on both their plates became cold, then the good deed that the IHOP employee could do is — halfway through the meal -— take their plates of food back, and put them under a heat lamp for a few minutes. Then they’d be able to finish eating warm food.

(Sorry, there I am being too analytical again. Actually I’m more sentimental than the average person, and enjoy sentimental movies and “feel-good” stories. I like things to make sense, though, and can’t enjoy the sentiment if the situation is one that would make me feel embarrassed.)

May you never be in the situation where you need to care for a disabled loved one; or be disabled yourself and need someone else’s care! I suspect your perspective will change dramatically.

Thanks for the good wishes. For several years I lived in a house with a senile aunt, who had been like a second mother to me. As she declined more and more, both mentally and physically, she needed continual care. My mother provided most of that care. I just helped in a few minor ways. I witnessed what was involved, though.

The story says they have become friends over the years. It was a friend helping a friend. Last time I checked, that’s what friends do.

I’m seventy-three, alone, and proud of my independence. Avoiding help is my aim, as long as I’m physically capable of doing so (and if eventually I have no choice but to accept it, I prefer that it come from family members — or from a person hired to provide it — not from an employee in a restaurant).

That’s better than if he didn’t really know her, but I still think it should have been done by the husband (and the employee’s help didn’t have to be done in such a conspicuous manner, just rewarming the food would have sufficed).

Thats your choice good for you.
How this guy in the article or any one else chooses to care for himself and his wife and who and how he allows or doesn’t allow is really none of your business.

So if he chooses to chew while the dude at the restaurant feeds his wife, deal with it.

Dear Max,

The following are the private emails you sent to me which you obviously felt were inappropriate to post on this public forum but yet acceptable in private mail.

These emails were not only unacceptable but disgusting in nature. You have no right to question nor impugn my military service, especially with the disgusting language you used to criticize me.

You are an embarrassment to this website and a slap in the face to all the other veterans who participate here.
