Pouring money into mental-health care won’t stop mass public shootings. Unfortunately, psychiatry is far from a perfect science.
There has already been a lot of second-guessing about Esteban Santiago-Ruiz, who killed five people and wounded eight at the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport on Friday. Despite extensive psychological evaluations, many psychiatrists had failed to identify Santiago as a danger to others. One of Santiago’s brothers blames the government.
In November 2016, local police escorted Santiago to a psychiatric hospital. Relatives say that after being released, he received further psychological treatment at his home in Alaska. Shouldn’t the experts have picked up on the warning signs?
Identifying someone as mentally ill is a far cry from deciding that the person poses a danger. Psychiatrists themselves have a poor record of knowing who will become violent. But psychiatrists know that they can’t predict the future.
Look at the inability of psychiatrists to identify who will turn out to be a mass public shooter. . . .

Very good article. Bottom line, there’s no way for psychiatrists to preemptively confine potential killers unless they are willing to detain literally millions of citizens most of them harmless. This can’t be done.
Meanwhile you’ve got to be able to defend yourself and those around you.

Totalitarian governments always like psychiatry, because it allows them to incarcerate people through accusation alone.
Declare the entire country to be a psych ward, and you have “solved” the problem, liberal style. Now everyone is mental, all can be treated for various issues under Obamacare, and if anyone goes lone wolf, they just need more counseling and Xanax. Some collateral damage is unavoidable so that the worst cases can be identified and treated first.

A general demoralization of a country is also more than we can ever hope to ask the services of psychiatrists or psychologists to ameliorate.
A genuine answer arises from a different direction: the spiritual. A solid sense that God cares.

The Islamic Allah is of quite a different temperament than the Jewish Jehovah or the Christian Jesus. The name of that god itself represents a usurpation: before Islam appeared, the Allah term was in widespread use in Arabic translations of Jewish and Christian bibles (yes, history proves this out). Islam stole the name. It would not be the only time in history that a group stole a term and twisted it to mean something that it did not originally mean. Liberal and gay come to mind here.
That is one mental defect we can control.

I don’t know why Jews and Christians should walk on eggs when talking about the Islamic notion of Allah, but maybe they do in part because they have current theological disagreements of their own. But an argument about the structure of divine salvation should take a back seat to one about whether a certain other proposed object of worship is quite clearly about damnation. Even its proposed heaven is sub-spiritual and fleshly, with both Jewish and Christian notions about the glorification of God being quite absent. Whatever the best of mankind is, this Islam doesn’t seem to set it forth at all.

Second his disease was overt! The Ft. Lauderdale Airport shooter is a Muslim convert who years before joining the U.S. Army took on an Islamic name (Aashiq Hammad), downloaded terrorist propaganda and recorded Islamic religious music online, according to public records dug up by the investigative news site of an award-winning, California journalist.
Oh, we might want to THINK we can, but the truth is that this battle is waged on a supernatural level. There are scads of demons defending Islam, and a frontal assault with no appeal to the God recognized by either Jews or Christians will result in a devastating backlash... the arm of flesh will fail.

If what I have been sensing is correct, an era of the glorification of God (Jewish and Christian) is fast approaching. This would be galling to the Islamic Allah, which will attempt to raise forces and mount assaults, but ultimately in vain.
However we need to glorify God to participate in the strength of God through which the kingdom of demonic war will be vanquished and the kingdom of divine peace will be ushered in. I know that jolly well both from the bible and from an all too long time in my life that I spent NOT glorifying God because I was too busy glorifying myself.
So they sign the release. Their logic escapes me.
Here is an idea; make the doctor who approves release responsible if the guy goes off track. Same penalty.
They aren’t police and can’t be police. Nor would anyone want to go to a psychologist or psychiatrist if they were under such a gun. We would jump from the frying pan into the fire.
And by the way, charity-haters will find lack of charity coming their way sooner or later. Just a warning. You are free to ignore it; you are not free to enjoy an exception to the real consequences. We don’t get to choose divine policy as to preferences.
