Top National Rifle Association officials split Sunday with Donald Trump's position that armed club-goers are a good idea.
"I don't think you should have firearms where people are drinking," said Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's chief executive officer said on CBS' "Face the Nation." "But I will tell you this. Everybody, every American starts to have -- needs to start having a security plan. We need to be able to protect ourselves, because they're coming. And they're going for vulnerable spots, and this country needs to realize it."
NRA lobbyist Chris Cox told ABC's "This Week": "No one thinks that people should go into a nightclub drinking and carrying firearms. That defies commonsense. It also defies the law. It's not what we're talking about here."

Not true. In Florida, anyone can carry a firearm in their home or place of business.
A lot of clubs in Tampa have armed security and/or off duty LEOs.

You can conceal carry in a bar in Colorado too as long as you aren’t drinking. I have on occasion when meeting someone or waiting for a table. OTOH if I am having a few with friends the gun stays home. Frangible ammo is a good idea
Armed club-goers? Mixed feelings about this as alcohol and firepower can be a dangerous blend. Perhaps, if the ‘designated driver’ is also the ‘designated carrier’?

There is a great new study that surprised even me. In research of thousands of bar shootings, there is no recorded shooting involving licensed concealed carriers shooting because of a disagreement. That does not mean that they don’t disagree, it means that trained people make every place safer. Wayne should have had that at his fingertips rather than crawl in a hole.

Yep. I think designated drivers should also be allowed to carry. They just must not drink when carrying - or driving.
Personal responsibility should make a comeback. Obviously the nanny state isn’t always there when you need it.

Question. While I understand the laws differ from place to place...generally speaking, is a police officer allowed to carry a weapon into a bar while he’s off duty and might have a drink? (How about Homeland Security? The IRS agent?)
I have wondered about this. Typically, the municipal "fire code" regulations, or whatever they're called, would require a certain number of exits relative to the number of people the building can accommodate -- and in fact that number of people is determined by the number of exits. One man can't possibly cover all the exits in a building holding a few hundred people.
One of many still unanswered questions.
It is strange, but somewhat less so, given the late hour and degrees of intoxication and fatigue. Americans outside, armed to the teeth, cold sober, hesitating 3 hours, is stranger by far.

I don't know if that is the case. What I do know is that concealed weapons permits do not allow carry in bars. This establishes a supposedly "gun-free zone".

But your original point was that the financial burden of providing security should fall on the bar. Nonsense. The bar is blameless, it is the state that made the law and the state should bear the entire burden of the consequences of their law.
The NRA has been behind every single major gun control legislation for over 100 years. Heck, they even coined the phrase “sporting purposes of firearms”, the Brady Bunch didn’t do that.
Prove it. Oregon allows guns in bars, and we don't have any more bar shootings than other states.

Think about the lifestyle of the patrons there: gayly exposing themselves to infection by deadly, incurable disease.
While I understand the logic of the right people and security staff being armed, I wouldn’t support clubgoers being armed in establishments prone to gang activity, especially nightclubs. That’s a powder keg waiting to go off.
