Oh, The Orlando Killer Didn't Use An AR-15 Rifle...
Townhall.com ^ | June 14, 2016 | Matt Vespa

Posted on 06/14/2016 11:55:16 AM PDT by Kaslin

Folks—the demonization of the AR-15 rifle has begun in the media. The usual talking points about its lethality, its rate of fire, and its scariness are coursing through the veins of the anti-gun Left following the Orlando attack. Omar Mateen committed the worst mass shooting in U.S. history on Sunday morning, which will likely be reclassified as a terrorist attack, when he murdered 49 people at a gay nightclub (Pulse). As Bob Owens and Streiff noted at Bearing Arms and RedState respectively, Mateen didn’t use an AR-15 rifle, but the media has a narrative to dole out (via CBS News):

A law enforcement source said that the shooting suspect legally purchased recently the two weapons used in the attack at the shooting center in Port St. Lucie near his Fort Pierce home. He had a Glock 17 handgun purchased on June 5, a Sigsauer MCX assault rifle purchased on June 4 on his person during the shootout, and investigators later found a .38-caliber weapon in his vehicle.

Owens noted that the rifle Mateen bought “has no major parts that interface with AR-15s in any way, shape, or form”:

The rifle used by the Islamist terrorist in Orlando was instead a Sig Sauer MCX carbine, a modular, multi-caliber (able to swap to different calibers, including 5.56 NATO, 300 BLK, and 7.62×39) rifle system that sometimes utilizes STANAG magazines common to more than 60 different firearms, but otherwise has no major parts that interface with AR-15s in any way, shape or form.

This of course will make no difference at all to the anti-gun politimedia, who don’t particularly care about factual accuracy and who likely wouldn’t be able to tell an AR-15 from a toaster oven if their lives depended on it.

Via Streiff, the purpose of the narrative is to clear a path for its prohibition for civilian use:

Now this Sig is every bit as dangerous as an AR-15. It is sold in a semi-auto version to sportsmen and in full automatic by assorted special operations forces worldwide. The point is that it is not an AR-15 and no one, other than the media, ever claimed it was an AR-15. In fact, there is no humanly possible way it could be mistaken for an AR-15. This is not a mistake. This is a narrative. It is designed to build a consensus that the AR-15 is uniquely dangerous and contrive to outlaw it. Once that is accomplished the cry will be raised to outlaw similar weapons.

This is a Sig Sauer MCX Carbine:

We must remain vigilant. We must fight back against this narrative, but as of right now—a new ban on so-called assault weapons isn’t going to happen, folks. That could change if we lose to Hillary Clinton in November, and if Republicans lose the Senate. The Second Amendment is on the ballot. Choose wisely—and by wisely I mean, saying “hell no” to Clinton.

Our sister site, Bearing Arms, will have a more detailed post about the difference between the two rifles later today. Stay tuned.

Journalists should know that an AR-15 doesn’t fire 700 clips per minute so it must have been something else. They need to pay more attention to what Grayson and Obama say about guns.

Assault rifle? You just validated the lefts entire argument.

I haven’t read everything on the Orlando shooting, but from what I have read it didn’t matter much what gun(s) he used. I don’t see anywhere in the articles that any of the patrons fought back. In other words, when you confine the sheep into the pen you have plenty of time to reload and continue the killing. There are plenty of first hand accounts of escaping but no account of anyone trying to subdue the shooter.

I’ve heard that. He’s pulling the trigger very fast. It was a target-rich environment.

This is a pretty girl firing an M-16 full-auto:

"...In other words, when you confine the sheep into the pen you have plenty of time to reload and continue the killing. There are plenty of first hand accounts of escaping but no account of anyone trying to subdue the shooter."

Again, the libs don't get self defense with a concealed firearm. The police and SWAT were too late to save those people.

Someone in that club could have put the dog down before he took his last life. It's a shame. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is... a good guy with a gun."

They are not “limiters”.

It is called and Auto-Sear. None of the civilian models have such a device installed, nor are they capable of having one installed without a competent gunsmith machine out the floor of the lower receiver and a couple of holes drilled in very specific places. Also you need the specific fire control group, the disconnector, and the bolt carrier modified to set the timing properly.

After looking at more pics, nope, you can't put an AR upper on the Sig MCX lower, no buffer tube accommodation, and the lower appears to have a mount for a swing-away stock where the hole for the buffer tube mount would be on the AR lower.

Thanks! Boy, do I feel stupid! Of course you can't use the Sig lower with AR uppers. No buffer tube! I'll put myself in timeout for missing the obvious.

Demonization of the AR-15 is misplaced. Tom Brokaw has identified the p[roblem as the AR-14.

If that is so, then what we are hearing is 1)an illegally modified rifle and/or 2)SWAT firing back.

There is no way he is going to have an illegally modified rifle since such modification requires special machining and gunsmithing expertise.

With that being said, using logic and ruling out the most outrageous possibility, the only answer is that any extra gunfire was via SWAT.......

And for what it's worth, in a situation like that, full auto by SWAT themselves and the collateral damage that would have resulted would not have been an option......

As a post script, I don't think any swat teams are even armed with full auto weapons..........but I might be wrong.

This is a distinction without a difference. In terms of mechanical engineering and functionality, the Sig Sauer version is comparable to any number of other semi automatic magazine fed rifles. These rifles are perfectly legal and very popular.

I may or may not have a Remington 700 bolt action rifle that fires the exactly same ammunition, but only holds five rounds and must manually eject an expended cartridge and load a new round by manipulation of the bolt. The effect on the human body when hit is identical. Those clueless politicians and similarly low information media types would call what I may or may not have a “deer rifle” while the other would be called an “assault rifle”. I would not recommend the Remington 700 in .223 caliber for deer hunting and I would never recommend civilian AR-15 type rifles for use in military combat assaults. The differences are essentially cosmetic.

During the three hours that elapsed between the shooter first entered the Orlando club and when the SWAT team executed their breach, killing the shooter, either weapon discussed above would have been more than adequate to kill 49 unarmed citizens. In fact, a .69 caliber Charleville flintlock musket commonly used by our Revolutionary forefathers would have served the same purpose quite well. However, if anyone in that nightclub had been armed with a revolver or a modern semiautomatic pistol, they could have defended themselves and one or more of them would have killed this maniac before the slaughter got to these monstrous numbers.
