He has said that the wall would be built from precast concrete and steel and that it could be 50 feet tall, if not higher. After calling for it to extend across the entire 2,000-mile southern border, he more recently said half that length could be sufficient because of natural barriers. He has pegged the cost at $4 billion to $12 billion, most recently settling on around $10b.
Some see that as low. Theres a lot of logistics involved in this, and I dont know how thoroughly theyve thought it out, said Todd Sternfeld, chief executive of Superior Concrete, a Texas-based builder of walls. The resources alone would be astronomical.
Mr. Sternfeld, who has led major wall projects across the country and approached the Trump family last summer, suggested that Mr. Trump was overly optimistic about the cost and was underestimating the complexity of the undertaking.
Running the numbers, Mr. Sternfeld said a 40-foot-tall concrete wall using a post and panel system that went 10 feet below the ground to minimize tunneling would cost at least $26 billion. The logistics would be nightmarish, including multiple concrete casting sites and temporary housing for a crew of 1,000 workers if the job were to be completed within Mr. Trumps first four-year term.
Maintenance would be an additional recurring expense, said Walter W. Boles, an engineering professor at Middle Tennessee State University who specializes in concrete construction. Deep trench work would also be necessary for keeping a wall of that height from toppling, he said, and seismic sensors to detect digging would be wise for preserving its integrity from below.
Thats one heck of a construction project, said Mr. Boles, who assessed Patrick J. Buchanans 1996 proposal for a border barrier. Its certainly a lot more ambitious than I was imagining.

Who do you think I'm talking about? The Swedes?
Israelis do a bang-up job, as well.
Yet, a 6 billion dollar high-speed train from nowhere in central California (to be built by Diane Feinstein’s husband!) to nowhere in central California is an example of “modern transportation” essential to curbing greenhouse gases!
Which it will not do.
Never make money.
Have no customers.
Their prices are deliberately stupid, outdated, exaggerated.
First order of business.....militarize the border. Put 150,000 troops on the Mexican border with orders to shoot to kill anyone who approaches outside of a Border Station.
Make being in the US illegally a felony. Punishment is deportation and permanent irrevocable prohibition from re-entry for any reason On a second offense, it is a capital crime with execution forthwith.
Give them a period of time to get their affairs in order, and get out. 5 days is adequate for me, but 30 days will do.
About 1% of what the gov takes in. And we can’t afford it??
It doesn’t matter if you build a wall and then leave the gates open. There are hundreds of bus lines running daily trucking invading aliens North to continue the crime wave of the century, robbing American citizens of their future.
Save money. Round up illegals for the labor. Have them work off a 12 month sentence, then deport them and repeat.
We can use this money:
I was recently involved with a project that involved precast. It went like lightening.
The foundations could be drilled piers every 10 feet (the panels themselves are strong enough to span from pier to pier)...really limiting the amount of concrete hauled to the site. They could even pre-cast the piers and place them in a slightly over-sized hole, and use a minimal amount of concrete around that, to further reduce on site concrete.
And, as you suggest, the bulk of the labor would occur at batching plants, where the panels could be cast. No need for labor camps in the desert. Just one crew could make good production...I’d estimate up to 10 miles per year for one crew.
I think both your posts make great points.
I think it can be done without a giant wall.
Walls are as often as not used to keep people in which us something to keep in mind.
The cost estimates here sound like chump change relative to all the other BS our govt blows $ on.
Israel has built a wall that is very effective: These
millions can be deported over time through attrition and
normal arrests for felonies .
Define uninjured. They all are not going to come along peaceably. Restraint injuries? Cable ties? Ropes?
“...hes not going to do either of those things...”

I see from your posting history that you took a break from FR from October 2015 until today.
You may want to get caught up on Jim Rob’s view of things.
Use Mexico’s illegal entry laws for one and secondly deny them any welfare benefits or any benefits at all. You sick? Here’s an aspirin, cut yourself - here’s a band-aid. Have a nice day and buhbye.
Yes we can do anything we set our mind to do! Proved it many times!
Vote Trump!
“Hire the Chinese. They build great walls”
And don’t for the Israeli’s their walls are good too!
