ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) -
A local tow truck driver said he refused to tow a womans car after he saw Bernie Sanders stickers on the vehicle.
Kenneth Shupe said he was called to pick up a woman stranded on I-26 in Asheville on Monday.
When he saw a bunch of Bernie Sanders stuff he said he told the woman, very politely, that he couldt tow her car because she was obviously a socialist and advised her to call the government for a tow.
"Every business dealing in recent history with a socialist minded person I have not gotten paid," Shupe said. "Every time I deal with these people I get 'Berned' with an 'e' not a 'u'."
Shupe, who runs Shupee Max Towing in Travelers Rest, said he is a conservative Christian who supports Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Shupe said he has drawn a line in the sand not to do business with Bernie Sanders supporters.
Sanders is running for president in 2016 on the Democratic ticket.
I respect their beliefs, and I hope they respect my views, Shupe said Wednesday.
The womans mother Kelle McWade posted an angry message on Facebook after the incident, calling Shupe a bigot.
"Trump's motto is 'Make America Great Again'," McWade said. "And this kind of divisive behavior is not going to make America great again."
Below is Kelle McWades public post:
Heads up, friends.... Cass had a wreck in Asheville yesterday. She is fine, but the car was not driveable. We called our mechanic who was tied up in Easley at the time, so he sent ShupeeMax Towing to get her. Kenneth Shupee drove from Travelers Rest to Asheville, hooked up her car, and when he went around to the back, he came back and told her that he wouldn't tow her because she had a Bernie sticker on the back of the car. HE LEFT HER ON THE SIDE OF THE INTERSTATE IN NC, and DROVE AWAY. Spread this bigot's story far & wide. Btw, I'm guessing he's a Trump supporter. The only difference is that the Don would have taken the money, because he at least realizes that liberals' money spends just the same as anyone else's. Dumb (expletive) cost himself money driving all the way to Asheville & back for nothing. (Expletive).
Greenville Attorney Steve Sumner weighed in on the situation saying,"We may not like it and we may not agree with it but I don't believe any laws were broken."
Sumner said unlike race, sexuality, and religion, political affiliation is not a protected class.
"As long as there is no contract between the driver and the tow truck company then there is no legal obligation for the tow truck company to pick her up," Sumner said.
An good example of freedom of speech and expression not meaning freedom from consequences.
“I’ve been in her shoes, and I shudder to think someone wouldn’t help me because of my political views (if they were obvious). Often I’ve had to put trust in strangers that I would worry about my family trusting strangers like I have. “
I’m with you-—the guy is a complete a**.
We all do business daily, either directly or indirectly, with people with opposing political views.
This guy must have the intelligence of a flea.
.
Well, cats aren’t usually as bad.
No, not at all. From my post #58 on this thread:
But there is the payment angle. The tow truck driver had a justifiable concern that he wouldn't get payed. So get the money up front, then make the tow. Or just make the tow, and keep the car until you get payed.
Might have been a better move to send her a copy of his business license and charge her the amount he pays for that for one year.
Nothing says “I’m an idiot” like a Bernie Sanders for president bumper sticker
He made it out to be a creditworthiness issue, which could have been viewed as an isolated matter and one amenable to solution, but acted like an ass about it just the same.
Once you say to all and sundry you’re a Christian, the world expects you to be a class act. And saying you’re “conservative” only heightens the expectation of hewing to that.
(1) Love the story.
(2) Apparently people don’t read the whole article before opining. [Happens frequently here.]
Kidnapping, slavery, prostitution, and forcing people to perform against their will are crimes, not business.
If the person in the article does not want to tow cars with Bernie stickers, there are other businesses that can do so, and can collect the money up front.
And so it does. But if you are claiming to be wise, and then are unkind to idiots, then the idiots may conclude that being wise means being unkind.
I think Bernie fills a philosophical hole which was left by churches decades ago when they started jumping on things like FDR’s Social Security bandwagon.
It’s like the woman who accepted the hypothetical $1,000,0000 bid for her intimate services and then reacted with disgust at a $1 offer was told: we have established what you are, now we are only haggling the price!
But as for suing for discrimination, I don't think that would fly. You can sue for discrimination only if the discrimination involved a category specifically mentioned in the law (race, gender, etc).
I don't think political affiliation is a protected category. But I'm no lawyer. I might be wrong.
Don’t love the example... braying about being “conservative Christian”
I would have towed her car but hit her with a dem voter surcharge i did it and still do after obama was elected when you work in folks homes you know what side they are on
And therein lay the rub - he stated in the article that his experience with socialists led him to expect her to not pay the bil.
The regular family mechanic refered the tower. I wonder if the mechanic refers any more business to this man after he stiffs his clients.
me either its hard to get them off and buff out the key scratches
But even yet, to have been stiffed by ALL Bernie fans, sounds incredible. I sense huge hyperbole. Maybe the ONLY cases of getting stiffed were from Bernie fans, but that isn’t the same.
And I wonder what he had done to the Bernie fans. Did he try to give them the big capitalism sell? Maybe did they react to THAT? I’d have wanted to dig further. Maybe he did her a favor since he couldn’t refrain from haranguing her on top of identifying as “conservative Christian.”
Perfect response! LOL!
Whatever happened to those signs you used to see everywhere, “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone”?
Perfect return of a grudge... congrats.
