Trump's impending nomination means it's time for a third candidate
Washington Post ^ | May 3, 2016 | Eliot A. Cohen

Posted on 05/03/2016 7:43:44 PM PDT by kevcol

Eliot A. Cohen served in the Defense and State departments in the George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush administrations, respectively.

It's over. Donald Trump, a man utterly unfit for the position by temperament, values and policy preferences, will be the Republican nominee for president. He will run against Hillary Clinton, who is easily the lesser evil but is trailed by clouds of scandal and misconduct and whose party's left wing poses its own threats to liberties of speech, religion, enterprise and association.

It is time for a third candidate, and probably for a third party.

Some of these guys are dead serious when they say that.

For those sucking on the teat of the Uniparty Hillary is certainly less threatening than Trump. Trump may cut them off, expose them, throw them in jail if they’ve crossed lines that were for “little people”.

Trump should pick Jeff Sessions as his VP. Gives the Cruz folks a VP they’ll support and someone who can work with congress.

Wow, 60% didn’t vote for him but he won in a landslide. Wait until the General when people actually vote. Are you still all “Go, Jeb, Go.”?

He’s a neocon, and the neocons have no base. There isn’t a constituency pf people out there that desperately wants America to take responsibility for order and stability across the entire globe, entirely paid for by our own blood and treasure. They just glom back and forth between the Democrat and Republican Parties for as long as they’re tolerated. Hillary will welcome them back to the Democratic Party with open arms. No need to go third party.

I was going to ask: Are they (Washington DC, the Bush presidency-bureaucrats, the groups backing the Lindsey Graham, McCain, Romney, Dole, Bush I, the GOPE, the media quoting the GOPe, ...) really that clueless, that stupid, that blind?

This guy answers the question.

When guys like this talk about “reverence for the Constitution, what they mean is that they will give it a fancy funeral.

How many Freepers were around in 1980 when the Democrat media was saying the same things about Republican nominee Ronald Reagan? How he was so dangerous for America, unfit for the office of the presidency, etc. etc.? How he was another dangerous Barry Goldwater conservative who would start a war with Russia? They were having fits about him. It was unrelenting.

"the left will fund a candidate that will pose as a center/right alternative to Trump"

Not going to happen. You would need someone with the faux popularity of the ahoy polloi who could fund overnight. Not a general (wrong year), not a(n ex-)mayor, in fact not a political or business figure, because that's what you've already got. So unless you know for a fact Tom Hanks is running tomorrow on the America Party ticket and has ballot petitions going in all 50 states, your theory has no validity.

“Eliot A. Cohen served in the Defense and State departments in the George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush administrations, respectively.”

This is the FIRST TIME, in reading THOUSANDS of op-eds that I’ve ever seen the person’s background at the front of the article, it is ALWAYS at the end. I was about to go to the end to find out who this clown is.

This is the kind of media we’re up against. They want it front and center that Republicans are fleeing Trump and will compromise standards that have been used religiously for decades (if not longer) to get their way.

...and by the way, what does “served in” mean? If he worked as in Intern in DOD during a summer during college, does that mean ‘served in’? In other words, what the hell did he do?

The Republican Party is like Neo in the Matrix - about to go through a very painful, but necessary, extraction of the parasite that has burrowed into its innards.

So Elliot Cohen is going to support Hillary? OF COURSE HE IS.

Anyone who is surprised? WAKE THE HELL UP.

Yes. They are parasites on the patriotic tendency in American politics.

The demise of white working class communities so desired by National Review and the others is hastened by killing or crippling their young men in meaningless foreign wars, the promotion of which is one of Elliot Cohen's specialties.

You will of course have noticed that, after the Iraq disaster, that our actual enemies in Riyadh and Islamabad still sleep soundly in their beds.

That is the essence of neocon foreign policy, and that is what we will continue to get with Hillary.
