HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Two state lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require Pennsylvania’s high school students to have a basic understanding of American history and civics before graduating.

House Bill 1858 would require that students pass a test on 100 basic facts from the United States Citizenship Civics Test, the test all immigrants must pass when applying for U.S. citizenship.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, glad to see this happening. The pinheads in college these days mostly can’t identify 90% of the people in our government by pictures.

To heck with the “students”. They’re too busy being programmed by the DNC. VOTERS should be required to know American history and civics.

I expect to see liberals fight this for a number of reasons.

When I went through the public school system in California the big step required for moving on from 8th grade to high school was passing the Constitution test. It's been a long time but I recall it being akin to a 12 year old's bar exam. I was talked about all year.

It’s been a long, long time, but I remember two requirements for high school graduation - American history followed by civics.

Based on saying of George Santayana, 'Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.', in a few short decades, Dhimmicrats will ensure that the periods 1992-2000 and 2008 - 2016 will NOT be included in history texts!

Not only will this incentivize students to learn about our history, it will also increase the value of a high school degree from Pennsylvania. The only “people” who lose out with this bill are the liberals, who desperately need to keep our youth ignorant if their decrepit ideology is to survive.

Our current governor would veto it if it passes.

And if not, the teachers would simply not comply.

And if the teachers complied the children would still pay no attention and they'd be promoted anyway.

Most people, I'm sorry to say, do not realize how abysmally ignorant today's students are. There are honors students and valedictorians who can't tell you the names of PA's senators, or the dates of the Civil War, or who was POTUS during WW2. I know numerous people (including two elementary school teachers and a lady with a master's degree in English) who have no idea who Lee Harvey Oswald was, or what year Kennedy died.

Thank you for referencing that article Red in Blue PA. Please bear in mind that the following critique is directed at the test and not at you.

The civics test is at least a step in the right direction.

However …

If the test is based on the one referenced below, then it may be a weak test imo.

Civics (History and Government) Questions for the Naturalization Test

High school students should be held accountable for knowing Congress’s constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers. They should also be aware of the clarification by state sovereignty-respecting justices that Congress is prohibited from appropriating taxes in the name of state power issues, essentially any issue that Congress cannot justify under its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers.

“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
