I think that's true (we're on our own), and beware too of false promises of protection. For the most part, protection is a highly localized function. It mostly doesn't exist anyway, except in people's imagination. Small problems are attended to after the fact (clean up, evidence taking), or not at all. Big problems are "run away from" (LA Riots, Ferguson) until they burn out on their own accord.
I don't believe the Chicago police had any intention of keeping order at the Trump rally, and were forced into dealing with the leftovers when the rally was canceled. They provided too little force on scene, and this was deliberate and knowing. In contrast, the law enforcement in other venues has been appropriately staffed for the expected crowds.
I think the KC rally for tonight will be a replay of Chicago last night.
