Cam Newton now must face a sickening reality

There would be no dabbing on this night for Cam Newton -- the biggest night of his NFL career, a night when the Panthers superstar was attempting to complete one of the greatest seasons a quarterback has ever delivered.

As it does for every team that loses the Super Bowl, the end came in an almost violent abruptness.

Broncos 24, Panthers 10 in Super Bowl 50 Sunday night at Levi's Stadium sucked the life from every one of the Carolina players, but none more than Newton, who'd been so brilliant all season.

Newton, who threw 35 touchdown passes and rushed for 10 more in the regular season, finished the game 16-of-38 for 245 yards, an interception and two lost fumbles that led to 15 Denver points.

When it ends for the Super Bowl loser, the finality of it all is something that players who've experienced it have a difficult time describing. Some even contend they'd rather not have gotten to the game at all if they were not going to win it.

So just like that Sunday night, blue and orange confetti rained down on the field and Newton and the Panthers, who entered the game with a remarkable 18-1 record, were quickly ushered off the field to make way for the winners' celebration ceremony.

Yes, risk it; it is the last game of the season. Other QBs have fallen on the ball and won Super Bowls.

I’m glad the Broncos won but concede that Newton is better than an average QB; they were the ones watching the game at home. He is great QB but a young, inexperienced one; he needs to grow up.

Yup, age and coaching experience rattled a young QB after taking his favorite toys away. Wade was brilliant in finding the buttons. Can’t recall a game where the D blitzed so many times.

I guess I was one of the few people who picked Denver in this game -- not just to beat the spread, but to win the game outright.

As a fan of the New York Giants, I based this entirely on what I saw in the Carolina-Giants game late in the season. The Giants were awful this year from top to bottom, and yet they came almost all the way back from a 35-7 deficit before eventually losing 38-35. Carolina was the worst 15-1 team I've ever seen, and I wouldn't have been surprised to see them lost their first playoff game.

I find that hard to believe ... mainly because Marino hardly ever got sacked, so his opportunities to fumble were very limited.

That's what he gets for trying to look macho instead of putting his hand over his heart during the fine rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.....despite so many fears, even Lady Gaga did a better job of honoring our Nation than he did - reminded me of Obama on the stage way back when......

I heard about it. Cam should be bigger than that and proud of his record already. The Super Bowl is just gravy on top of it. It’s sad that he acts petulant like that because his team (especially his defense) did quite well. Just a lot of missed opportunities, and many mistakes.

Manning didn’t do a whole lot, from what I saw; so I don’t quite understand the focus on him this morning.

Newton did a bit more, but didn’t get much help from the rest of his team.

There was some drivel in the sports media last week about the Panthers being the “Blackest” of NFL teams—That is, they weren’t constrained by “White Man” rules of decorum.

Clearly, someone forgot to advise the referees of the attendant Affirmative Action requirements in calling the game.

I thought prior to the SB, they had lost only 1 game?

It really was beyond stupid, to suggest that Cam made the right move by avoiding falling on the ball and that his coaches would applaud that decision.

Sofaking stupid, in fact, it doesn’t even deserve a rebuttal. It stands on its own stupidity.

It is just unfortunate that he wasn’t grabbed for a safety near the end of the game.

I did think that Carolina got screwed on that non-catch call in the first quarter. Don’t know what the replay official was looking at, but it clearly looked like a catch to me. Two plays later was the sack and fumble recovery for the TD. Might not have changed the outcome, but the NFL needs to bring some common sense into the entire instant replay business.

Cam needs to grow up, he's a role model to so many kids who already don't know manners. And don't give me the “he's young, only 26” argument. There are scores of under 26 year old athletes - Jordon Spieth comes to mind, who are great role models.
