Starship Enterprise will be restored to its 1967 glory: Smithsonian to rebuild 11ft model used in original Star Trek TV show

It has been 50 years since the original model of the Starship Enterprise made its final imaginary voyage.

Today, the 11ft-long model lies in pieces at the Smithsonian Museum in Virginia with a damaged secondary hull and nacelles.

Trekkies the world over have been urging model makers to save this iconic ship.

Now the Smithsonian says it will attempt to do just that, but restoring it to its appearance in 1967, during the filming of the episode 'The Trouble with Tribbles'.

I think we are referring to 2 different resins.

I am referring to the botched repair years ago where museum staff glued the broken off beard back with modern epoxy resin.

I would thing the original natural resins used at the time of the burial (if that is what was used) had all but turned to amber, and been impossible to remove without massive damage.

I was happy to watch the episode where Kirk fought the Gorn lizard guy with my 10 year old the other day. He has been getting into the show and Kirk is generally a manly guy so I like him to actually witness men acting like men on TV!

However, At the end I forgot that there was this athenian alien guy who was this massive pacifist.

It pissed me off because the gorn murdered an entire colony of men women and children without giving them warning to leave and at the end of the episode, Kirk smiled and said “don’t kill the Gorn, we’ll talk and work things out.”

It was like how we are handling ISIS today.

The chair and the shirt inspired zilch. The phaser, the tricorder, the medical scanner, the replicator and probably a few things that I’ve forgotten for the moment, those inspired and many are real today.

The replicator was the one item I didn’t think I’d ever see in any form in my lifetime.

I liked it when it first came on and I still watch every Saturday night on METV.

One thing I have noticed is that last season had some weak episodes. Still some good ones but it probably was about time to end it.

There are a few things which look silly today. They think people 200 years in the future will still be using tape recordings.

Probably the most impossible thing which we sort of accepted without much thought was the transporter. If they could do that, they could do about anything.
