Vander Plaats was foolish, perhaps, if he thought he had to raise those funds for a Trump who would have spoken for nothing. But that doesn’t mean Trump was bound to refuse it either. Trump could stand to be more gracious about it, granted. Biting hands that feed him treats is not a good way to win friends and influence people.
Looking at the tweets, it nowhere says Trump paid him a dime, only that Plaats was begging for free services at Trump hotels (which apparently he got, but he claims Trump "refused payment), and that he was asking for 100,000 for himself for a particular event. Doesn't say he got it, how he got it, or that Trump "generously, was willing to do it."
This is the same Vanderplaats who barely escaped from the FEC for getting one million from the Rick Santorum campaign in exchange for his endorsement. The Mitt Romney campaign accused him of the same thing.
Nailing someone for dishonesty can be devastating in these presidential election cycles. It prevented Gore from winning imho and probably Clinton in 2008. But if you want it to be successful at making it stick you need a charge that really resonates. This doesn’t, sorry. He said she said.
