We all know Ted Cruz is right, as in politically right of center, and I mean really right.
But he's also right about his latest proposal leading up to Monday's voting in Iowa.
The Texas senator says he wants to debate Donald Trump one-on-one, and he means right now.
Now that would be worth paying for, as in pay-per-view. Or, perhaps to lure The Donald in, find a sponsor willing to donate all proceeds to wounded veterans' groups since that's what Trump said Fox should do with money it would make off a scheduled Thursday night debate that he, Trump, now says he intends to skip.
Cruz is right two ways. First, he and Trump appear to be the only game in town in the Hawkeye State. Current averages of multiple polls maintained by Real Clear Politics show Trump leading with 33 percent, Cruz second with 27 percent and nobody else in the 11-person field anywhere close.
(For Rick Santorum fans who remember Rick won Iowa last time around, the former Pennsylvania senator's current average is one percent, but he polled at zero in the latest Iowa Quinnipiac poll.)
So a Cruz-Trump-only debate would really give Iowa voters a clear sense of what they're investing in.
But Cruz is also right in suggesting they debate without moderators. I'd add they should do so without a live audience.
That way there'd be a better chance to see who actually knows anything rather than just seeing who can rile a crowd.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to actually believe what we hear from a president.
Put them both in the same room.... no crowd, no moderator, no questions, just cameras and mirophones.... and just let them hash it out like men,
Cruz would mop the floor with Trump and his hair in a one-on-one debate. All Cruz would need to do is challenge Trump to get specific with his policy positions.
It’s the comment you make when you can’t beat the opponent. Trump wouldn’t DARE debate Cruz one on one about the issues. All Trump has is character assassination.
A real debate against a real debater would be a disaster for Trump and he knows it.
Neither does the circus. But I wouldn't elect the head clown for president.
I agree. It could actually be good for both men. If they handled it right they could both look presidential and build support for both of them. Would solidify that this race is a race between Cruz vs Trump or Trump vs Cruz (depends on which side your bread is buttered)
Controlled her? He demanded she not moderate Thursday's debate and she's still going to moderate it. And Trump has stomped his feet and said he's not participating.
Who again is in control?
Its up to the candidates to participate in debates, tweets, emails, websites, press appearances, and so on, according to what each thinks is most effective for them. The public is stuck deciding on the information that is available; and whatever inferences it wants to draw.
If Trump isn't presidential because he told FoxNews to stuff it, then the voters will dismiss him.
It’s the only talking point they have.
They can’t say “we stand with the media”. That’s the real cowardly thing.
Any truth to the rumor Fox is going to invite Megyn Kelly’s BFF Michael Moore to the debate?
There are NO REAL DEBATES! There never has been. It’s only a staged choreographed show by the debate moderators, who want to pick ‘winners’ and ‘losers’.... and people still get suckered into the fantasy that they are REAL DEBATES!... Seems like the networks have won with many people who think like you.
Trump will ignore Cruz and all the other candidates who have asked to join him.
Agreed!
Constitutional eligibility has nothing to do with character. It's clinical, unemotional, stuff, void of policy, character, and personality.
Constitutional qualification is the bare minimum to be entitled to consideration for the office. Maybe Trump would lose the debate, but it's fair game for him to point to the question of Cruz's eligibility.
Such an approach is not risk free, as your point of view demonstrates.
An outstanding justification to put Cruz and Trump in the same room for a one-on-one debate. Well done.
Was listening to Levin last night when the challenge was made by Cruz. It was not Cruz asking if he could join Trump. It was Cruz challenging him to a 1 on 1 debate, without a moderator.
The media is the establishment. They are the head of the GOP. Explains why Levin and Rush are upset as well. Trump is taking away their control.
...Who again is in control...
He is.
People with ideas and a strong ideology want to convert people. Classic leadership 101.
