It’s not their land, if they don’t like the rules don’t lease.

Reality says it is not the Forest service, BLM, or government land either. In the west, the Federal Government has taken or rather not distributed the land at Statehood as it did in the East under the enabling laws. Serious business that is causing ever increasing problems with states hog tied at generating money to run the State. Article 1 Section 8 limits Governments roll but usurping Government of today says otherwise. Who wins is now the issue, and it better be the States and the people or Katie bar the door.

My first reaction yesterday on hearing of the standoff, was why now and of all people the Bundy boys who managed miraculously to live through the last one. and the Oath Keepers already acknowledging that the Hammond’s were not wanting a confrontation and had backed off their support. It really leaves only one scenario and you and Mike Vanderboegh have it right. The real question, is the Bundy family back in NV reachable and teachable before the massacre begins? If they have any desire to see their sons living they would have been rolling the vehicles toward OR the day before yesterday.

From one 98er to another, I must have missed that story somehow if it was a thread on FR. Sorry for your loss. Is the perp who did serve time, that much of a nut case he would come after mom?

I think the Feds gave them a 'taste', and let them out so they could sell them the ranch. When that didn't happen, they put them back in prison.

/tinfoil, sorta...

They set the fire in 2001, which almost killed their relative and which burned out 140 acres of federal land and took it out of production for two years.

Now, I may not live in Eastern Oregon, but in North Dakota and Eastern Montana, rangeland recovers in a year or less after a fire.

Me, I prefer Hoppe's...

Yeah, I'm with you. I think that other stuff might gum up the action.

“As far as the BLM goes I have zero connection, we have zero BLM land in our area and very little in the state.”

This is how it should work, what you may not understand is the BLM thinks it owns the 12 Western States, by virtue of the large percentage of land retained in Federal hands at statehood. In some cases, and perhaps all, there is insufficient land in private hands to support a livestock operation when it takes large acreages to support one cow/calf much less a herd. Grazing permits on Federally held lands are in many cases an absolute necessity. The Bundy ranch is a prime example and if my history is correct they are the last ranch standing in their part of Clark County, all others having lost to Federal encroachment. The fire consumed 139 acres of public land and destroyed all evidence of the game violations.

Say what? ALL Evidence? Think about that, Dusty, I have fought wildfires and there is always something left of a critter, even a gut pile would likely survive a grass fire (roasted, shriveled, but still there). No bones, no hide, no head, no skull, nothing? Not likely. Scavengers might do the clean up, but the fire alone would not likely eliminate all evidence, unless all there was was a blood trail.

“All I know, BLM land helps the rest of us Americans have access to hunting lands, which private ranch lands do not allow, or allow at huge cost.”

At the risk of being repetitious, the BLM doesn’t own poop. It is either state land, or it is land that should be in state hands. You have also stumbled into the reality that land in BLM hands costs you and I the taxpayer rather than the production that is possible in state or private hands.

Again see: http://www.americanlandscouncil.org/

I think these ranchers who use public land think it is theirs, however, it belongs to all of us.

Until it is in private or state hands you are correct, however by being in the hands of the BLM it is benefiting very few and the cost is being born by you and I the taxpayers.

I'm no expert on grazing. The two year figure was mentioned in the appeal court decision. I have no idea why the land wasn't usable for so long.

I suspect they’re talking about all evidence of human involvement. Besides I’m not going to retry them, they’ve already been tried and found guilty. Witness testimony including a family member said the fire was intentionally set to cover the crime.

Joe we lost 16 square miles of our place to a fire 5 years ago and it took at least 3 years for the ground cover to come back 100%. Cedars, Hackberrys and Mesquites will take many more years.

Y'all must not get much water, either, it you aren't doing more than 22 head a section in a good year. Not sure about Oregon.

We might be a bit spoiled up here in the shortgrass prairie.

I said 22 on a good year! 16 to 18 seems to be the average and we never get enough water. That last fire hit us right in the middle of the drought and was fueled by 35 mph winds. It was the wind slapping hi-lines together that started it. We had planes, helo’s, the forest service, city and county fire departments fighting that one. Didn’t lose any cows are equipment but we did lose about 12 miles of fences. I did lose 80 heifers that year but it wasn’t due to the fire or drought. I was told they were breed to a low birth weight bull which obviously wasn’t the case. Lost about 22 others to the heat and getting stuck in the mud and dying before we could get them out. It was really bad year.

No wonder it takes 90 sections for a cattle ranch there. Here it can be done with far fewer.

I hope you have a better year this year.

I have lived in upland fire country for 40 years. When the wind hits 35+mph there is nothing that can be done to stop the fires advance. Best they can do is try and turn the flanks. We lost a whole neighbor of homes few years ago after fire season was “over” to a fire driven by 50+mph winds. Every piece of fire equipment for 50 miles was on that fire and they could only save the trucks and their own lives.

Sorry for your losses. Ranching can be a tough life.

"Hell I carried a gun for this country, a gun for this county and now I carry just in case I run into 2 or 4 legged varmints/twits."

You sir have my undying gratitude for your service to our country....thank you. But I have a genuine fear for our country when I see our young folk in and around the small town where I live... their values are totally different from what used to be in America.... As we have seen at the border, in the mid east and else where around the world, there are damn few of them that are willing to defend our country...

Some of the best and proudest days of my life was when I was serving my country... There is little in life that bestows more honor on a man then defending his love ones, his friends and his neighbors....

I think all life (human) should be defended... If your not willing to fight to protect your home, your family, and your country, what the hell good are you...?

There is no doubt in my mind that military service should be MANDATORY..!

MHO... :)

Two 30 day physche evals state he is a Sociopath, they are a unstable lot. Maybe it’s just my own fear. But I take no chances. And I lived to close to Memphis, even moving to the next county is still to close. But was not going to get hubby to move further as he has to have access to the Navy Base in Millington, TN.

The LIBERAL A$$ AG promised him he’d served no more than the extra 10 months, after he’d sat in the County Jail for 2 years. A$$ AG ran every time he saw me. Wouldn’t talk to me. He knew he had a Mama Grizzly on his hands in me. I’m Highlander Scot stock with a lot more stubborn racial mixes thrown in.

I fought every one of those 6 parole hearings and won. I fight dirty. I learned the stats and used them. When we walked into the second hearing I took 2 State Reps and a State Senator with me. All you could hear in the prison hall was VIP in building. Our head of TN Parole board was married to a State Rep. She has since passed on, he still sits as head of the parole board. Said in plain language he could control recidivism rates just by choosing who he let out. Begged me to let the POS go to a half way house for the last 6 months. I refused, made him serve out every blasted day I could.

Not really a story thread on FR, I did post a parole hearing notice to get letters sent in a couple of times.

This was a small town, a little newspaper. I had more press when we formed groups, and fought for Victims State Constitutional Rights and won. We bounced 1 Liberal Anti-DP State Supreme Court justice. Penny White, when we went after Adolpho Burch, he screamed racism while we knew he was just anti-DP. Ms. White was white, he was black. Both DEM and Dem appointed.
