Students at Lena Dunham’s college offended by lack of fried chicken

Students at an ultra-liberal Ohio college are in an uproar over the fried chicken, sushi and Vietnamese sandwiches served in the school cafeterias, complaining the dishes are “insensitive” and “culturally inappropriate.”

Gastronomically correct students at Oberlin College — alma mater of Lena Dunham — are filling the school newspaper with complaints and demanding meetings with campus dining officials and even the college president.

General Tso’s chicken was made with steamed chicken instead of fried — which is not authentically Chinese, and simply “weird,” one student bellyached in the Oberlin Review.

Others were up in arms over banh mi Vietnamese sandwiches served with coleslaw instead of pickled vegetables, and on ciabatta bread, rather than the traditional French baguette.

“It was ridiculous,” gripes Diep Nguyen, a freshman who is a Vietnam native.

Worse, the sushi rice was undercooked in a way that was, according to one student, “disrespectful” of her culture. Tomoyo Joshi, a junior from Japan, was highly offended by this flagrant violation of her rice. “I f people not from that heritage take food, modify it and serve it as ‘authentic,’ it is appropriative,” she said.

Oberlin’s black student union joined in the fray this month by staging a protest outside Afrikan Heritage House, an on-campus dorm.

The cafeteria there wasn’t serving enough vegan and vegetarian options and had failed to make fried chicken a permanent feature on the Sunday night menu, the school newspaper reported.

Those students started a petition that also recommends the reduction of cream used in dishes, because “black American food doesn’t have much cream in it,” according to the Review.

The Nevada-based Universal Society of Hinduism joined the food fight last week after students discovered that the traditional Indian dish, tandoori, contained beef.

And yet, if they did fry the chicken for the general Tso's the health nazis would've came out of the woodwork raising holy hell about how fried food is contributing to the obesity and type2 epidemics. You just can't win with PC-ness. Besides, this is school cafeteria food, whether it's Chinese, Vietnamese, Italian, Kosher, Mexican, etc always tastes "off". What do these participation trophy winning snowflakes expect? Another case of getting offended for the sake of getting offended for fun, profit and power.

It's the "Princess Student and the Pea" story told with greater and greater absurdity.

"I can feel the pea under 200 hundred mattresses."

Well, I can feel the pea under a thousand mattresses...

These folks are serious yawns...

My college cafeteria never had Vietnamese sandwiches but I discovered them a year after graduation on my own. They’ve become much much bigger since then. Price hasn’t gone up a lot in several decades.

The school should substitute for all that offensive racist food with Michelle Obama’s recommended fare.

The Mexican food night was cancelled because it was racist.

The ‘soul food’ black history month night was cancelled because it was racist.

Having the food is racist. Not having the food is racist.

They should just let these brats starve.

My college cafeteria had food that looked like it had crawled all the way from Vietnam to the dining hall ...

What you call “culturally inappropriate”, I call [culture “A”]- [culture “B”] fusion food.

What is the sense of having a “multi-cultural” society, if no one is allowed to borrow ideas from other cultures? What you call “cultural appropriation”, I call “an homage to other cultures”.

If “whites” aren’t allowed to borrow from other cultures — when will these other cultures stop “appropriating” from “white” culture?

The patents or copyrights ran out a long, long time ago. It’s all in the public domain now.

If we can’t benefit from multiculturalism, why not revert to uniculturalism or monoculturalism?

I cooked my own Top Ramen.

Never checked to see if it had authentic Asian cockroach parts in it.

Maybe my College degree will be rescinded.

I remember an Asian carryout in the D.C. 'burbs 25 or 30 years ago. Don't know whether it was Korean, Vietnamese, Thai, or a combo joint. They had a sammich they made that I loved: it was marinated grilled chicken (or advertised as such; could have been whatever was found rummaging in the dumpster), a whole slice of cucumber, thinly sliced lengthwise, and peanut sauce, on a French baguette roll. Anyone care to identify the particular origin? All I know was, it was the most deliciously unusual sandwich I ever had.

Serving nothing buy Gerber baby food would solve the problem, not to mention being totally “culturally” appropriate given the diminutive intellectual climate on most college campuses.

Geez. When I was in college my only worries were Exams, what to do on the weekend, and who sold beer to kids under 21.

This article appears to be poorly-written satire. You mean it’s not?

I had always thought Gen Tso’s chicken, although based on Hunan-style cooking, was created in the US.

I get so tired of SOME people claiming certain dishes to be only theirs. Fried chicken, watermelon, etc. do not belong to only one racial group: they are Southern food. I (totally caucasian as far as I know) grew up eating Southern food. Fried chicken was routinely a Sunday dinner. Sometimes when I was a little child, we would put a quilt on the grass to sit and eat watermelon that my grandparents had grown. Good Heavens!!!
