Obama to rename nation’s highest mountain

President Obama on Monday will announce a plan to rename Alaska’s Mount McKinley to Denali, the name that nearby natives have long used.

By taking action to officially name the 20,000-foot peak Denali, Obama will take the Alaskan Natives side in a dispute that has stretched on for more than a century.

“Generally believed to be central to the Athabascan creation story, Denali is a site of significant cultural importance to many Alaska Natives,” the White House said in a Sunday fact sheet. “The name ‘Denali’ has been used for many years and is widely used across the state today.”

Alaska first formally requested the change in 1975.

It has often been a bipartisan legislative priority among Alaska’s congressional delegation to rename the mountain. Lisa Murkowski (R), the state’s senior senator and chairwoman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, which is responsible for the matter, has sponsored legislation in every session of Congress to do so since taking her seat.

At a hearing about the Denali bill in June, Murkowski said renaming the mountain “seems a fitting gesture and an appropriate way to honor the culture and history of Alaska Natives.”

“There is no need for this name confusion and controversy to continue,” she said.

At the same hearing, Victor Knox, the associate director for planning, facilities and lands at the National Park Service, which manages the mountain and surrounding area, said the Obama administrative respects the history of Denali and would not object to Murkowski’s legislation.

Efforts to rename the mountain have often faced strong opposition from Ohio and its congressional delegation in an attempt to preserve the honor of William McKinley. The 25th president was a presidential candidate when a gold prospector first named the peak after him.

The White House’s announcement did not specify how Obama and Interior Secretary Sally Jewell will assert authority to change the mountain’s name without approval from Congress.

Obama announced the action as part of a series of efforts to improve outreach to Alaska Natives. He will meet Monday in Anchorage to discuss the efforts with Alaska Native leaders and Gov. Bill Walker (I), Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott (D) and Murkowski.

The new actions include neighborhood revitalization funding for Anchorage, a native youth engagement program and wildlife management cooperation efforts.

Meanwhile....

"Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell announced Monday that the state will sue the Obama administration to allow construction of a 10-mile road to give residents of a remote fishing village access to emergency medical flights at an all-weather airport.

Residents of King Cove, Alaska, were outraged in December when Interior Secretary Sally Jewell nixed a plan for a land swap that would have allowed the building of an unpaved road between the small town and the airport at Cold Bay..... More

In the spirit of Obama's cutting the country down to size, I was thinking he'd rename Mount McKinley as McKinley Hill.

“There is no need for this name confusion and controversy to continue,” she said.

It was named for McKinley in 1896.
That name stuck for almost 80 years.
Then activists for anything that isn't White decided to confuse things and cause controversy.
The confusion and controversy has lasted 40 years.

And now the activists for anything that isn't White beleive that they should be declared the winners because we've had enough confusion and controversy.

At least, small comfort that we the people can call it Mt. McKinley no matter what.

Like that has stopped him before. Any chance he would be changing it if it were named for a SJW?

It’s still Mount McKinley.

Lead is gray.

Just saying.

We can’t have it named after a Republican. At least he didn’t name it Mt. Czolgosz after McKinley’s assassin.

Sort of like renaming Squaw Mountain (Maine) to Big Moose Mountain. We still call it Squaw Mountain.

The Triborough Bridge will *never* be the “RFK Bridge” and Mount McKinley will *never* be “Denali”.

Wouldn't this make it the same thing as the Ten Commandments, a crucifix or a Nativity scene on U.S. Government property. This appears to be a violation of the commie 'RATS' "wall of separation". We're going to have to tear down Denali. The whole friggin' mountain! Crap!!! COMMIE HYPOCRITES!!!

When asked about it, Obama's response was "AAAHHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA!!!"
