"Efforts to rename the mountain have often faced strong opposition from Ohio and its congressional delegation in an attempt to preserve the honor of William McKinley."

If the Alaskans want to name it Mt. Denali (or Mt. Sarah Palin), it's in their state. Ohioans can name their own mountain.

Exactly right. Anything reflecting honor or credit... DENIED!!

Nobody remind him that America is named for an Italian white boy.

But this renaming shtick isn’t new, it’s been part of the left-wing playbook for quite a while. I remember driving down to Los Angeles late one night and listening to some Amerindian Red (a Ward Churchill/Russell Means type) foaming at the mouth about changing all the geographical names in America as soon as the righteous Reds came to power. And “foaming” was about right.

By golly, I think you’re right.

President Benjamin Harrison signed an Executive Order on September 4, 1890, establishing the United States Board on Geographic Names. The Board was given authority to resolve all unsettled questions concerning geographic names. Decisions of the Board were accepted as binding by all departments and agencies of the Federal Government.

Personally, I don’t care what the name is. I just wonder what possible authority the President has to name or re-name mountains. Or is that a wasted question with this Pres?

Phew!!! For a minute there I thought he was going to name it “Kill Whitey Mountain” in honor of his “racial” policies.

Sort of like Cape Canaveral.

From 1963 to 1973, the area had a different name when US President Lyndon Johnson by executive order renamed the area "Cape Kennedy" after President John F. Kennedy, who had set the goal of landing on the moon. After Kennedy's assassination in 1963, his widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, suggested to President Johnson that renaming the Cape Canaveral facility would be an appropriate memorial. Johnson recommended the renaming of the entire cape, announced in a televised address six days after the assassination. Accordingly, Cape Canaveral was officially renamed Cape Kennedy.

Although the name change was approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names of the Interior Department in December 1963, it was not popular in Florida, especially in the bordering city of Cape Canaveral. In 1973, the Florida Legislature passed a law restoring the former 400-year-old name, and the Board went along. The name restoration to Cape Canaveral became official on October 9, 1973. The Kennedy family issued a letter stating they "understood the decision". NASA's Kennedy Space Center retains the "Kennedy" name

If you check the Urban Dictionary, one of the nicer definitions is “slang for an Italian”.

They did the same thing to the UND Fighting Sioux. So far, they haven’t even picked a new name, but to me, they will always be the Fighting Sioux.

I lived up in Alaska. I rememeber a story about a glacier near where I lived. The glacier. the glacier name was Leconte.after a biologist in 1887 . The family of the biologist decided to visit the glacier and was up set that the pronunciation that the locals used sounded nothing like there last name. they were in fact very angry about it and mentioned it often to as many people in town they could. finally one of the local native who knew the original name that it was called before it was renamed by us Europeans asked if he should be insulted that rather then it being called by its original native American Tlingit name Huti. they named it after a family to stupid to realize how insulting they were to those that lived near the glacier.

I personally would like to see the native American names but don’t like it being just at the whim of the president to change the name by decree.

McKinley was the last President who was a civil war vet, a President assassinated in office and the President who liberated Cuba and the Phillippines. I don’t give a f**k about some moronic creation myth and even less about that damn black racist communist in the White House.

....”President Obama on Monday will announce a plan to rename Alaska’s Mount McKinley to Denali, the name that nearby natives have long used....By taking action to officially name the 20,000-foot peak Denali, Obama will take the Alaskan Natives side in a dispute that has stretched on for more than a century”....

Oh for crying out loud....the man needs to just leave his hands off the Untied States of America and go back to Kenya and do his work there.
