On Sunday, Donald Trump Showed Why His Campaign Is Doomed
The Fiscal Times ^ | July 26, 2015 | Rob Garver

Posted on 07/26/2015 1:51:12 PM PDT by EveningStar

For the past six weeks, an overarching concern for the Republican Party has been the impact that Donald Trump might have on the GOP primary election – particularly the damage he could do on the debate stage by turning an already unmanageable 10-candidate forum into a full-on circus.

On Sunday, though, Trump himself gave one of the clearest examples yet of why his candidacy is doomed to fail, and why, if handled properly, the debate stage could be his Waterloo.

Trump has staked much of his campaign on his promise to solve what many of his supporters see as a major immigration crisis. As anyone serious about the issue of illegal immigration recognizes, there are at least 11 million undocumented workers in the U.S. right now, and rounding them up for deportation is not a viable option.

Tapper asked Trump to expand on his policy beyond building a wall on the border. The host may have been hoping for a considered reply revealing Trump’s detailed thinking on immigration.

Trump called in to CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday morning to speak with host Jake Tapper.

Much of the appearance was, in fact, more of a Trumpian soliloquy, which appears to be his favorite form of expression, than an interview. However, when Tapper was eventually able to interrupt him and press for some policy specifics, the cracks in Trump’s façade quickly became evident.

EXACTLY what the government requires in MEXICO!

That sounds like it is probably about accurate.

Plus our share of central and southern Americans.

I was in Costco on Friday evening, myself and a few, large Mormon families--we were the only people not from the 3rd world somewhere.

The last thing that was supposed to kill his campaign helped it.

When did Cruz say that? Have a resource? I only heard him say pretty much that he would seal the border, then we’d have a conversation about the people here.

Perhaps someone should send Ron Mr. Trump’s book!

http://www.ontheissues.org/Get_Tough.htm

I believe that Mr. Trump has been thinking about this stuff for a while!! What he would do.

But herein is the basic point...that point which many of us have tried to make...

WHERE does Trump STAND on the issues? For a man who has been running since 2012 essentially, WHY doesn’t he have a well thought out plan?

This piece, like it or not, points out EXACTLY why Trump isn’t going to make it...or shouldn’t. He babbles but has no specific answers.

Reading between the lines, he is saying that step 1 is build the fence, step 2 is to aggressively deport criminals, and step 3 is to begin a winnowing process to "encourage" others to leave. I doubt you'd ever get the 11 mil or whatever the number is---any more than you ever catch all the speeders. But with step 2 and 3, you will eliminate a very sizeable population and stem the influx.

Then you can develop very specific programs on how to send others back or funnel them into some legalized system.

No path to citizenship for 1.65 million illegals in Texas

When discussing what to do about the 1.65 million illegal immigrants living in Texas, Cruz weaved into the Second Amendment, alleging his opponent didn't support gun rights. "What does this have to do with the question?" Sadler asked before fiercely denying his opponent's allegation. Cruz again said he didn't support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants living in America, while Sadler said the opposite, as expected.

Additionally, he introduced legislation in 2013 which banned illegals from attaining citizenship. From US News, May 2013.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, a newly elected Republican with a penchant for making headlines, filed an amendment that would bar undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States from ever earning citizenship.

Cruz also filed amendments that he says would "strengthen border security measures; reform the high-skilled temporary worker program; modernize, streamline and expand legal immigration; and prohibit federal, state or local entitlement benefits for those here illegally."

Cruz told conservative commentator Sean Hannity in April that he has "deep concerns" about allowing undocumented immigrants to eventually become citizens.

"I think that is profoundly unfair to the millions of legal immigrants who have followed the rules, who have waited in line," he said.

Trump: "We’re going to do what’s right. Some are going to have to go and some – Hey, we’re just going to see what happens."

I guess you missed the part where he said, "some are going to have to go"

You want him to come right out and say that he's going to forcibly deport 40 million illegals? At this point in the race, that'd be suicide.

Take the hint. He told you that he's going to boot some illegals out of this country. Anything more than that, at this point, would be a bridge too far for a lot of Americans he's trying to gently coax over to our side.

Get your head around the fact that he's appealing to people from all across the political spectrum, which includes a lot of soft-hearted (but fed up) Democrats, and even (gasp!) straight up liberals. They're not ready to consume the sort of 100% Proof straight talk that you're ready for.

No, they'd be happy to hear that he's going to build a fence and stop any further illegal immigration. In their world, that's actually revolutionary.

Give it time. Let him (and us) educate these people on a gradient.

Trumps unwillingness to delve into details on this issue can be interpreted several ways. Some bad, some good.

So, counter to the reporter's assumption, today's interview with Tapper reveals nothing.

Been hearing that 11 million since clinton’s first term over 20 years ago...

Try 25-35 million!

The wall, and strict enforcement and penalties for hiring illegals would turn this around. Then charge the Mexican govt $100,000 for every illegal we deport.

It has been 11 million for at least 10 years.... it isn’t 11 million now... more like 15 to 18 million.

You can’t get them deported until you plug the leak in and start shipping them out.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

“Step one is to secure the border. Step two is to enforce the law. Repeat. “

WRONG! Step one is take away their sustanance. (jobs, public assistance, benefits, etc.) Anyone who employs an illegal, knowingly or not, will be prosecuted.
Step two? Give them 180 days to GET OUT. You snuck in here, you can sneak out. No penalty. After that, the round-ups begin. Those who attempt to harbor illegals or impede the effort will be charged with obstruction, at the very least.
Then, you build you triple fence with 6- foot trenches full of gasoline or ‘gators, and sniper nests every few miles or so, with shoot-to-kill orders.

Absolutely. I don’t agree with his position on H-1B visas, but at least that’s legal immigration.
